 Location Map

Series of earthquakes totaling six occurred on 20 Sept. evening in Tangail-Mirjapur region 65 to 70 km north-west of DUEO.

FIVE AFTERSHOCK occurred on 21 Sept. morning. The epicenter of the earthquakes are centred around Tangail-Mirjapur region. Modhupur fault is the source of these earthquakes.

These minor earthquakes are probably the fore shocks of a major earthquake which may likely to take place in Madhupur fault. Modhupur fault is one of the most active fault in Bangladesh may generate earthquake of magnitude more than 7 in Richter scale. Modhupur fault is located on the western margin of Madhupur Tract is about 100 km long oriented along north-south direction is the potential source of earthquakes. The source of the great Bengal earthquake of 14 July 1885, 19 December 2001 earthquake in southern Dhaka city, 20 March 2008 earthquake in Tangail and a recent earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on 27 July 2008 are all occurred along this Modhupur fault.
