COURSE PHILOSOPHY

FINC 450B, Finance for a Sustainable World (Baumhart MBA):

This course is developed with the goal of reimagining the core MBA course in finance, for experienced professionals focused on the intersection of sustainable development and social impact/change with finance, incorporating modern research and pedagogical tools. It covers the fundamental principles of finance including time value of money, discounted cash flows, valuation, the risk-return tradeoff, capital markets, and investment management. It also introduces how sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues affect corporations, risk management, and investments in capital markets. The course introduces how innovative strategies and financial instruments can capitalize on opportunities in a changing world with growing global challenges, while exploring the power capital markets have to address the challenges. The goal is to develop critical thinking about the role of finance in reimagining capitalism as more responsible and sustainable, by focusing on a triple-bottom-line of economic, social, and environmental value-creation based on fundamental frameworks in financial analysis.
