People often confuse between the blade and rack servers as they both are the popular networking retainer. The blade is the unit that which can be plugged into standard chassis. Each server unit is a system main board, act as an individual and independent retainer. Each main board conducts its own system and serves to the different group of users specified and not connected with each other. Hence the performance became lower. Whereas the latter one looks like the switch which includes 1U rack, 2U rack 4U rack, etc.
It can easily fit into the desktop rack which comes in open frame or enclosed style. The rackmount retainer is self-sufficient i.e. the cooling, hard disks, power supplies, memory, processor, and raid controller- all are enclosed within the single retainer. They are efficient because you can fit loads of drives inside them. They are perfect for the situation when you need a lot of loads or storage for a single- use case. As compare to blade retainer, rackmount is cheaper as in the later one you don’t need to buy anything extra to make them work. A blade retainer requires a blade enclosure, while in rackmount, all you need is a shelf, power plug, and network uplink.
Rackmounts are flexible in nature as you can add more memory or replace the component within the retainer. Blade retainer is fully integrated boards and up-gradation requires replacing the blade unit within the blade enclosure. One aspect where blade retainer takes the cake that it has more space than the rackmount retainer.
The blade retainer is easier to maintain as they don’t have any cables. The units are swappable and easy to troubleshoot. In the case of rackmounts, they have messy cables causing hidden problems. Since, it is a standalone device, it more difficult to troubleshoot when the problem occurs.
Though both have their pros and cons, rackmount retainer scores in user application.
