Zavod ISBN/Edition Statements

Sometimes ISBNs in books published in the former Soviet Union have added to them numbered "zavod" statements which look very similar to edition statements.

Example:

5-235-01825 (2-й з-д) where з-д means “завод”.

What is a “zavod”? It is a single print run of a book that was printed in several batches: either in different places or at different times. For the purposes of RDA cataloging, we treat a zavod as we would a printing. It is not an edition statement.

So, the example above shows that the ISBN belongs to the second printing of entire run of a book and is not an edition statement.

Usually, zavods do not differ from each other as they are printed from the same typesetting, and so do not warrant a new bibliographic record for new manifestation. However, very rarely, some zavods will have some variations in pagination, layout, etc., and might qualify for the creation of a new bibliographic record.

Suggested cataloging practice: Transcribe the entire ISBN and zavod statement as ISBN data. If possible, try to identify if there are any differences from the previous printings. If there are significant differences, move the zavod statement to the edition field.

ISBN, pagination, and content is the same:

    • treat as ISBN information

    • 020 523501825 (2-ĭ zavod)

Pagination, layout is different; content varies

    • treat as edition information

    • 020 523501825

    • 250 2-ĭ zavod.

When in doubt, treat as a printing statement.

Экземпляры Завода практически ничем не отличаются один от другого. Номер Завода, как правило, обозначается в выпускных данных” (Translation: Zavod is a publishing term, that refers to parts of an entire run of a book, printed either at different times in the same or different printing houses, or at the same time at different printing houses. Copies of the same book within different zavods usually do not differ from each other. As a rule, number of a zavod is given together with other publishing information)
