Translation with the Same Name as Original Title

Translations having the same title as original works

There are cases in authority work when the title of a work in the original language and the title of the translation are the same. For example, consider the case of a Russian translation of a Ukrainian parody of Virgil’s “Aeneid”:

In this example, the diacritics in the Russian and Ukrainian titles are different but will normalize to the same form in the authority file; thus, the title of the Russian translation will be identical to the original title in Ukrainian.

In such cases, per the instruction in the DCM Z1, Introduction, page 3, an authority record for an expression that represents the translation is not required. An authority record may be created for an expression, but the variant access point for the translated title should not be added. It is recommended to add a 667 field that explains the absence of the variant access point in the 400 field. For example,

Note: To clearly identify the cases discussed in this chapter, consult LC Romanization Tables to confirm the characters and/or diacritics. Example 3 below shows the case when normalization rules do not result in the same title for the Serbian translation of Taras Bulʹba and the Russian original, therefore a VAP for the Serbian title is added to the authority record. Note the difference between the treatment of the Macedonian translation title in the example above and the Serbian translation title in the authority record as the result of normalization rules.
