Ongoing Numbered Conferences with Topical Titles

A conference series composed of an open-ended sequence of individual conferences sharing a generic title constitutes what is known as an ongoing conference. Many ongoing conferences are numbered and can be cataloged as either serials or monographs depending on the preference of the cataloging agency. Therefore, ongoing conferences may have Name Authority Records for the collective conference and/or individual instances of the conference. In some cases, the individual conference names consist of the generic name of the ongoing conference which is numbered, together with a topical title. In such cases, create a name authority record for the individual conference bearing a distinctive title. Do not add the number to the preferred name for the conference. Instead, add a variant access point for the generic title of the conference along with the numbering.

The name appeared on the resource as “IV Ezhegodnai︠a︡ Almatinskai︠a︡ konferent︠s︡ii︠a︡ "Kont︠s︡ept︠s︡ii i podkhody k regionalʹnoĭ bezopasnosti: opyt, problemy i perspektivy vzaimodeĭstvii︠a︡ v T︠S︡entralʹnoĭ Azii."”

There is only one conference that will have the specific name embodied in the topical title ("Kont︠s︡ept︠s︡ii i podkhody k regionalʹnoĭ bezopasnosti: opyt, problemy i perspektivy vzaimodeĭstvii︠a︡ v T︠S︡entralʹnoĭ Azii."); so the number associated with the generic title is not relevant to the topical title. Since “annual” applies only to the generic title, it would also be inappropriate for the topical title.

As the cataloging agency cataloging the proceedings of these conferences treated all as monographs, there was no need to make a Name Authority Record for the ongoing conference.

If another agency did choose to catalog the proceedings of this ongoing conference as a serial, another Name Authority would be added:

Also note that collective Name Authority Records for ongoing conferences must always be made if the conference changes its name, even if all the conferences are treated as monographs. (See LC-PCC PS for 11.13.1.8)
