Names in Pre-Reform Orthography

Over the course of time, some Slavic languages have undergone orthographic reform. This has implications for the authorized forms of personal names and names of corporate bodies that existed prior to the reform.

When a name is available only in its pre-reform spelling, establish the name in that form and make a variant access point for the name in modern spelling. When the modern form of name becomes available, the headings should be flipped: the variant access point with modern spelling becomes the authorized access point, and the authorized access point in pre-modern spelling becomes a variant access point for the earlier form of heading (RDA and LC-PCC PS 11.2.2.5.1).

Please note that, when the switch has been made, the former authorized access point should have a control subfield ǂw with coding “nne” indicating that the heading was previously the authorized access point and that it is a valid variant access point under RDA.

Examples (in MARC format):

Personal name is only available in old orthography at the time of creating the authority record:

100 1 Glinka, Sergi︠e︡ĭ, ǂd 1775-1847

400 1 Glinka, Sergeĭ, ǂd 1775-1847 [variant in modern orthography added]

Name of corporate body is only available in old orthography at the time of creating the authority record:

110 2 Obʺedinenīe di︠e︡i︠a︡teleĭ Russkago finansovago vi︠e︡domstva

no. 11 (1923): ǂb caption (... Obʺedinenīi︠a︡ di︠e︡i︠a︡teleĭ Russkago finansovago

vi︠e︡domstva; Paris)

After receiving item with form of name in contemporary orthography:

110 2 Obʺedinenie dei︠a︡teleĭ Russkogo finansovogo vedomstva

410 2 Obʺedinenīe di︠e︡i︠a︡teleĭ Russkago finansovago vi︠e︡domstva ‡w nne [heading

flipped]

670 Bi︠u︡lletenʹ Obʺedinenīi︠a︡ di︠e︡i︠a︡teleĭ Russkago finansovago vi︠e︡domstva, no. 11

(1923): ǂb caption (... Obʺedinenīi︠a︡ di︠e︡i︠a︡teleĭ Russkago finansovago

finansovogo vedomstva founded Jan. 1922 in Paris by former members of

Russian finance ministry, by late 1922 had branches in Berlin, London and

Belgrade)

Please note that catalogers must keep in mind NACO normalization rules. Since diacritics are disregarded in normalization, access points that vary only in diacritics will normalize the same, and therefore no variant access point should be given.

Example (in MARC format):

100 0 Ilīodor, ǂc Hieromonk

The name is available in old orthography only and therefore established in that form. The macron above the i is disregarded in normalization; as a result, there can be no variant access point for the modern form of the name: Iliodor.

i.e., one cannot have:

400 0 Iliodor, ǂc Hieromonk

Example (in MARC format):

Personal name is only available in old orthography at the time of creating the authority record:

100 1 Vostorgov, Ī. Ī. ǂq (oann oannovich), ǂd 1867-1918

400 1 Vostorgov, Ioann Ioannovich, ǂd 1867-1918

400 1 Vostorgov, John, ǂd 1867-1918

670 His Polnoe sobranīe sochinenīĭ, 1913: ǂb t.p. (І.І. Восторговъ = Ī.Ī. Vostorgovʺ)

670 OCLC data base, 6-13-89 ǂb (hdg.: Vostorgov, Ioann Ioannovich, 1867-1918)

670 His O monashestvi︠e︡, 1969: ǂb t.p. (...Īoanna Vostorgova)

After receiving item with form of name in contemporary orthography:

100 1 Vostorgov, I. I. ǂq (Ioann Ioannovich), ǂd 1867-1918

400 1 Vostorgov, Ioann Ioannovich, ǂd 1867-1918

400 1 Vostorgov, John, ǂd 1867-1918

670 His Polnoe sobranīe sochinenīĭ, 1913: ǂb t.p. (І.І. Восторговъ = Ī.Ī. Vostorgovʺ)

670 OCLC data base, 6-13-89 ǂb (hdg.: Vostorgov, Ioann Ioannovich, 1867-1918)

670 His O monashestvi︠e︡, 1969: ǂb t.p. (...ĪoannaI Vostorgova)

670 His Polnoe sobranie sochineniĭ, 1998: ǂb v. 5, t.p. (Svi︠a︡shchennomuchenik

protoiereĭ Ioann Vostorgov) reprint t.p. (Prot. I.I. Vostorgov) p. 5-8 (Ioann Ioannovich Vostorgov; b. 20 Jan. 1864 in the Kuban; arrested by Bolsheviks and executed in Moscow on 28 August 1918)

In this case, no 400 ǂw nne is given for the old form Vostorgov, Ī.Ī. ǂq (oann oannovich), ǂd 1867-1918 as it would normalize to the same form as the modern form in the 100 field.
