Hierarchical Corporate Bodies at Head of Title

Sometimes the name of a corporate body that appears at the head of title page will include the name of a hierarchically superior body that governs it. Such governing bodies merely represent the higher levels of the institutional hierarchy to which a given corporate body belongs, and do not, in any way, contribute to the publications issued by that body.

Usually the name of the hierarchical corporate body is included in the authority record for its subordinate body as part of a variant access point.

Note that hierarchical corporate bodies are especially frequently found in academic publications from Russia and the former Soviet republics for academic bodies. Post-Soviet reforms in higher education and the subsequent reorganization of many government bodies and educational institutions in these countries resulted in changes in the "official" names of those institutions. Typically, these changes involved adding a verbose string of words indicating whether a given institution is funded by the government or not. The most common formula is: Федеральное государственное бюджетное образовательное учреждение высшего профессионального образования. [Name of the educational institution]. In addition, the name of the relevant ministry or agency usually appears before the name of the institution.

Suggested cataloging practice

Transcribe the name of a corporate body exactly as it appears, in a note. When tracing the names of corporate bodies that appear at the head of a title page (see Corporate bodies at head of title for information on when to trace), DO NOT TRACE the names of higher governing bodies that appear in conjunction with these corporate bodies.
