Geographic Headings for Corporate Names

If a geographic qualifier is needed for the authorized access point of a corporate body, but an authority record for the geographic place hasn’t been established, establish the geographic name basing it on the form found in the resource being cataloged, together with a consideration of any forms found in gazeteers or on the GEOnet Names Server (GNS) (RDA LC-PCC PS for 16.2.2.2).

Note that although many city names have been changed to the official language of the newly independent country, their conventional names are still in use:

Example:

Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan), not Almaty (Kazakhstan)

When an authorized access point for a geographic name needed for use as a qualifier contains a “type of jurisdiction” such as Russia (Federation) or Armenia (Republic), the “type of jurisdiction” is not included in the addition. (RDA LC-PCC PS 16.2.2.4)

Examples:

Moscow (Russia), not Moscow (Russia (Federation))

Yerevan (Armenia), not Yerevan (Armenia (Republic))
