Cities and Pre-AACR2 Forms of Corporate Names

It is important to remember that under pre-AACR2 rules corporate bodies may have been established under a jurisdiction (for example, city or country). In such cases an earlier form of the geographic name is reflected in a variant access point as an earlier authorized heading for the corporate body. This information can also be important in finding bibliographic records for old materials that may have been cataloged under these older rules.

Examples (in MARC format):

110 2 Biblioteka prisia͡zhnykh poverennykh (Saint Petersburg, Russia)
410 2 Leningrad. ǂb Biblioteka prisia͡zhnykh poverennykh ǂw nnaa [earlier authorized access point established under the name of the city]

110 2 Imperatorskīĭ Aleksandrovskīĭ lit︠s︡eĭ

410 2 Saint Petersburg (Russia). ǂb Imperatorskīĭ Aleksandrovskīĭ lit︠s︡eĭ

410 2 Petrograd (R.S.F.S.R.). ǂb Imperatorskīĭ Aleksandrovskīĭ lit︠s︡eĭ

670 Vesʹ Petrogradʺ na 1917: ǂb p. 437 (Imperatorskīĭ Aleksandrovskīĭ lit︠s︡eĭ)

[Imperatorskīĭ Aleksandrovskīĭ lit︠s︡eĭ existed at the time when the city was called Saint Petersburg, and later when it was called Petrograd. Variant access points have been added to reflect this].
