Changes in Names of Cities Used as Qualifiers in Authorized Access Points

This chapter covers authorized access points for corporate bodies, conferences, and series.

A corporate body is distinguished by the latest name of a place during the lifetime of the body (RDA 11.3.3.4). When a place used as a qualifier of the preferred name of a corporate body changes its name, the original authorized access point will be changed to a ǂw nne variant access point and the corporate body with its new qualifier will become the authorized access point (RDA LC-PCC PS 11.13.1.3).

Examples (in MARC format):

110 2 Institut globalʹnogo klimata i ėkologii (Leningrad, R.S.F.S.R.)

will change to:

110 2 Institut globalʹnogo klimata i ėkologii (Saint Petersburg, Russia)

since the Institut has continued to exist after Leningrad became St. Petersburg,

but:

110 2 Instytut Naukowo-Badawczego Europy Wschodniej (Vilna, Poland)

will not change as the Instytut ceased to exist before Polish Vilna became Lithuanian Vilnius.

These rules apply to conferences held in the same city at different times in its history--additions to the authorized access point and in the ǂc subfield will use the place name valid during the time of the conference.

Examples (in MARC format):

The following two authorized access points are both valid:

111 2 Simpozium "Geografii︠a︡ v Kirgizii" ǂd (1980 : ǂc Frunze, Kirghiz S.S.R.)

111 2 Bishkekskiĭ sammit ǂd (2005 : ǂc Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan)

because Frunze (Kirghiz S.S.R) was the valid name of the place in question from 1926 to 1992; the name was changed in 1992 to Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan).

These rules also apply to series authority records:

Examples (in MARC format):

130 0 I︠U︡ridicheskie nauki (Moscow, R.S.F.S.R.)

has continued publication after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and so changes to:

130 0 I︠U︡ridicheskie nauki (Moscow, Russia),

but:

130 0 Poeziii︠a︡ (Leningrad, R.S.F.S.R.)

does not change as it ceased publication in 1984 before Leningrad became St. Petersburg.
