Thank you Evelyn Barnes for serving as president of SMC Inc since 1975 (47years!). Evelyn retired from the cemetery board on March 31, 2022.
On September 16, 2023 an amazingly generous lady was honored for her dedicated service to the Bayside community. Read the beautifully worded description of Evelyn by her daughter Karen Smith:
I ask you, is there anything this Super Woman can’t do, won’t do, or hasn’t done on this earth to prove she’s the best human I know?
Congratulations to our Mom, Evelyn Barnes, for her dedication in volunteering 47 years to the Bayside St. Mary’s Cemetery Association as President.
It’s not just a title, it’s the behind the scenes that not many people think about. It was hours of phones calls, consoling families who have lost loved ones, working with funeral directors, making sure the plots were marked off correctly, taking care of the books/accounting, helping people purchase plots and making deeds to the land that were purchased. Coordinating luncheons for the families after the services. Making sure the cemetery was well maintained and kept, the list goes on.
It’s these selfless acts that make this amazing person so great!
She has had a rough year with cancer and had endured many surgeries and has faced it so gracefully as she has everything that life has thrown at her, because she knows the Lord put her on this earth to do good works and give him all the glory and she has done just that! A true example of who we should be!
She graciously has retired this position and was awarded a beautiful tree of life necklace from the association. 🌳
A huge thank you to all the ladies and gentlemen who have also helped and contributed their time as well to this little community that we call home. It takes a village!
Joseph F. Smith, nephew of Texas' provisional governor Henry Smith, founded the town of St. Mary's in 1857. Ten acres were set aside for this burial ground, in which the earliest marked grave is dated 1860. The cemetery served the thriving community until an 1886 storm destroyed businesses and homes, causing residents to move away. The burial site of war veterans and pioneer area settlers, the cemetery serves as a reminder of the important early coastal town of St. Mary's.
On June 11, 1948, St. Mary's Cemetery Inc was established as a Texas corporation. Texas Secretary of State #0009576601. June 2023 marks 75 years that St. Mary's has operated as a non-profit organization.
