2017 Rule Changes
Halo Rule Revised (as of 2020, this is an optional rule, coaches may agree on this prior to a game to enact it)
Halo rule - a hard hit ball whether a grounder or a line drive that strikes the pitcher gets one (1) warning per team. The second (2) time the batter is out. The call shall be made immediately and is a dead ball.
2016 Rule Changes (not approved until 2017 with above revision)
SSCSL Halo Rule - if a hard hit ball is hit back at the pitcher (definition of a hard hit ball is something generally moving faster than your average player can react to) and strikes the pitcher in any way, shape or form (foot, glove, etc.) the ball shall be dead and the batter shall be called out. No runners may advance.
Note – the halo will only remain in effect in the area of the pitcher’s mound, any move by the pitcher to place himself off the pitching mound to either insert himself in another “line” (i.e. – placing himself between SS and home plate) or move away from the mound to attempt to field a ball nullifies the halo protection immediately. Since the pitcher’s mound dimensions are roughly a 15ft circle around the “rubber,” a couple aggressive steps right or left should be an obvious indicator of such a nullification. If the pitcher is able to proactively move to field the ball (i.e. – advance forward to a grounder, etc.) the halo is also nullified (thus a pitcher cannot advance on a mid-speed grounder and “mis-field” the ball yet call for a halo rule out)
2015 Rule Changes
Member vs Regular Attender
It was approved that we do away with the "member" designation for teams in favor of simply a "regular attender" option. Thus teams would need to be comprised of either Regular Attenders or Others. Regular attenders being those who attend church at least one Sunday a month throughout the year or at minimum two Sundays a month during the softball season (June/July/August.) Thus teams would need to have 6 regular attenders on the field at any time in order to be a valid team. This is more in line with the spirit of the rules, which is simply to insure that there are more Christians around hopefully providing good examples and fellowship with non-believers (designated simply as "other") and insure we are not only having fun out there but providing outreach possibilities.
No new rules for 2014 Season
2013 Rule Changes
Both of these changes to last years rules were discussed by coaches at the spring meetings and agreed that they were solid additions.
Home Run Rule – 3 plus 1 up
The following rule applies to over the fence home runs for each team per game. Each team is allowed up to three over the fence home runs per game without penalty. After both teams have reached three over the fence home runs, the 1 up rule is then implemented. Each team is allowed additional over the fence home runs so long as they don't have more than one more than their opponent. In either case hits clearing the fence (if under the limits usually deemed a home run) in excess of the above specifications are ruled an out. the ball is dead and no runner may advance.
A fair ball touched by a defensive player (that is not caught) that clears or has cleared the fence in fair territory without touching the ground in the playing field shall be a four base award and NOT be included in the total of over the fence home run.
A home run will be charged for any ball hit over the fence whether runs score or not.
Both male and female home runs count toward the limit.
Home Run Base Tag Rule
If an over the fence home run is hit, the batter must touch first base. All runners (including the batter/base runner) MAY choose to run the bases normally if desired but it is not required to score.
The ASA Banned Bats list for 2016 is now at the link below (I plan to leave at least the past 3 years banned bat lists up for review in PDF format in the list below)...keep in mind ANY bat without an ASA Certification Mark is also banned/invalid.
