Track opened emails

After enabling the tracker, open the read receipt report to check if your emails have been opened.

For each email opened, in the column 'Merge status', the status will change from 'EMAIL_SENT' to 'EMAIL_OPENED' and a note in the cell will tell when it has been opened.

If you want more insights, you can select the appropriate row and you will see how many times a specific email has been opened and the first and last time is has been opened.

The open rate provides you a useful information regarding the attractiveness of your email from the subject line. Therefore, if you notice that it is low, don't hesitate to test different subject lines to increase your open rate.

How does the tracker work?

YAMM embeds a tiny, invisible tracking image (a single-pixel gif, sometimes called a web beacon) within the content of each message. When the recipient opens the message, the tracking image is referenced and recorded by our system. You can then click on the menu 'Check if emails have been opened' to check if our system has recorded opening of some of your emails.

How accurate is our tracking tool?

Our tracker is useful to provide you information about the success of your campaign through the open rate.

However, even if web beacon is being widely used by mail merge tools to track opened emails, it does have some limitations.

Therefore, please note that in general, the tracker cannot be 100% accurate.

My open rate seems too low or non-existent

Possible causes are:

    • The tracker has not been activated. Learn more

    • You haven't waited long enough after your campaign, and your recipients didn't have the time to read your email. Open rate tend to increase significantly only after a few hours.

    • The images are not displayed in your email. In most email services, like Gmail, people can disable the display of images by default. In that case, we won’t be able to record a read, unless the recipient explicitly asks Gmail to display all images from your email.

    • Your emails fell into your recipients' spam folder, or bounced. Please read this article to find solutions.

    • You deleted the YAMM-ID related to each recipient. Learn more

    • Your email is too large, and Gmail hid the bottom of your message. If the tracker was located at the end of your email, it will not be recorded.

    • You are trying to track on a copy of your spreadsheet. The tracker can't work anymore. Please use the original spreadsheet.

    • You are using Internet Explorer. The tracker can't be instantly updated on this browser. Please try on another one, for example Google Chrome.

My open rate seems too high / Emails are marked as opened right after your campaign

Possible causes are:

    • You opened your emails from your Gmail 'Sent' folder. This will be counted as read.

    • You opened bounced messages from your inbox. As they contain the email you sent, it will be counted as read too.

    • Your subscribers forwarded your email. When other recipients opened your emails, this will be recorded by our tracker.

    • Aggressive spam filters opened your emails before they reached your recipients' inbox.

Side notes

The data in the tracking report can't be retrieved beyond 10 days after you have completed your mail merge.

If you have multiple recipients in the same row of your spreadsheet (or people added as cc or bcc), it creates only one email and you’ll be able to check if this email has been opened but not who (among the recipients) has opened it.

To get more accurate open tracking, you can ask your subscribers to add your email address to their contact list, or choose to display images in their email client.
