Surviving Locomotives of the Lehigh Valley Railroad

Update! Google did an "upgrade" to all Google sites webpages, all across the world. This update was not optional, it could not be avoided. The "upgrade" totally destroyed the formatting of this page. :( Fortunately all the data itself is intact, its just the formatting that is messed up, to the point this page is almost unusable. I am working on manually restoring it, one section at a time. -- Scot

This chart, above, contains all LV locomotives that existed on 3/31/1976, the LV's last day of operation. Then their current status in 2023 is recorded with the color codes.

Update, January 2008:

112 has been sold! bought by Scott Kwiatkowski of Pennsy Railcar. She will be moved from her decades-long resting place in Tennesee, to the Pennsy Railcar shop in New Jersey, where plans are to restore her to operating condition, and repaint into her original LV "pre-war" paintscheme! She will then operate with the the Black River & Western in Ringoes NJ. (2008)

The Lehigh Valley had 27 EMD SW8's, the largest population of a single diesel model on the LV. Eighteen of the 28 were the famous "pups" that operated on the Hazleton branch. They were equipped with dynamic brakes (very unusual for switchers) and could MU on both ends. The LV ran them in sets of four, five, or more, operating them the same way another railroad might use road units.

EMD GP38-2

The LV bought 12 EMD GP-38-2 locomotives new from EMD in late 1972.

They were all delivered in the last LV scheme, Cornell Red with "billboard" yellow lettering.

They wore no other scheme during their career with the LV.

Their time with the LV was short, less than 4 years.

All but 2 are still operating today, 30 years after they were built!

and 27 years after they left LV rails.

After the LV was absorbed into Conrail on 4/1/76, the 12 GP38-2's,

along with the C-420's, were sold to the D&H. The D&H added a

"7" to the LV numbers. many remained in LV red for many years,

2 were in LV red well into the 1990's!

Upon the D&H being incorporated into the Canadian Pacific, the locomotives

yet again had a new owner. Today all but 2 (which were wrecked/scrapped)

operate on the CP.

Some of the following history information is from Joshua Blay's excellent page

on the LV GP-38-2's..which traces their history with the LV, D&H, Guilford, and CP..

WHERE ARE THESE THREE MISSING U-BOATS?? :( (2003)

Update! 2012! LV 507 was found!

LV 507, one of the long-mysterious "Texas U-boats" was found in 2012! unfortunately, she left Texas only to be scrapped!

LV 507, last known as Texas Utilities 23012, (yes, that is correct, 23012, a 5-digit number) left Texas for Kansas City and was

scrapped there in May of 2012. The fate of her two Texas sisters, LV 505 and 506, still remains unknown. They are no longer

with Texas Utilities, but where they went, and their fate, remains a mystery. It is likely they are also scrapped, but never give up hope!

507 magically appeared in 2012, even though her appearance was brief and she didnt survive long..her sisters 505 and 506 could

still be out there somewhere.

LV 507 - CR 2783 - TUGX 23012 - Scrapped May 2012, Kansas City Mo.V

LVF.

508

(CR 2784) ( to RMDI 12/2/97 after traded to GE )

(WIMX 2784) (Pennsy Supply 2784) (Whitestone 2784) (Lafarge 2784) (LTEX 2784) (Shelly Materials 2784)

Operating with Pennsy Supply (formerly Wimpey Minerals, WIMX). in 2003

Status change, 12/14/2003, unit is now with "Whitestone Supply" in Alliance Ohio.

Status change, May 2008, unit has been sold and repainted!

now operating with "Lafarge" in Alliance Ohio. kept the name "Fast Eddie"

see photo link at right. (2008)

Status change, January 2011. LV 508 has been sold again, this time to Larry's Truck & Electric.

She was seen lettered as LTEX 2784. LTEX could be a bad sign..a unit like 508 could be parts fodder,

(old U-boats arent exactly in high demand) then scrapped! although Larry does also re-sell, re-power

and lease a lot of units as well..so hopefully this is just another stage in 508's nomadic wanderings..

We will have to keep an eye on her. (2011)

UPDATE March 2011 - A happy ending to the LTEX story!

LV 508 was refurbished by Larry, repainted into "Ohio State colors", and sold to Shelly Materials.

Shelly Materials 2784 is now operating in Linndale, Ohio. (Cleveland) (2012)

RMDI in Pittston, PA.

LV U23B at RMDI. 510 is in good shape, and last operated in 2007..

will 510 be the unit to go to Sayre?? lets hope so! :) - (2009)

Update, October 2012 -Sadly, 510 was scrapped in January of 2012 in Pittston, PA

see the updates page for details.

511 (CR 2787)

512 (CR 2788) (to Texas Utilities 6/23/93 ) (Blacklands Railroad 2788)

Was operating with the Blacklands Railroad in Sulpher Springs Texas - (2004)

Sad news from Texas..Blacklands Railroad sold 512 to a mexican company in 2007..

The company tried to move the unit to Mexico, but could not get Union Pacific to move it,

so they scrapped it. :(

LV 512 was scrapped in April-May 2008.

Here is some additional information on the U23B's:

All built November 1974

LV 511 CR 2787 40108

LV 512 CR 2788 40109 reactivated 11/92, retired 3/8/93

It was rumoured that 2 R&N units were sold to (now) defunct Quincy Bay Terminal RR,

which is now Fore River Transportation.

and are now possibly stored in New England somewhere. (possibly LV 501 and 505?)

unfortunately this was found not to be the case..

I have determined that Quincy Bay Terminal only owned one U23B, #21, and she was not a former LV U-boat.

(see this thread)

SW900m

LV 120 to 130 started out as NW1's of 1937 and 1938 vintage.

in the 50's, they were all sent to EMD, over the span of a few years, (not all at once) and they returned as SW900m's..

they were 90% rebuilt..

Some consider them different engines after they came back, some consider them the same engines, but heavily rebuilt.

its a grey area. To confuse it even further, the later ones received new builders numbers, but the earlier rebuilds didn't..

LV kept all the same road numbers, before and after the rebuilds.

EMD SW900m 106 - sold 1975 (Western Electric/Pittsburgh #76)

EMD SW900m 107 - sold 1976 (Republic Steel/Chicago #150)

- was owned, either whole or in part, by PP&L).

LV 126 was discovered surviving, and added to the list, in 2013.

SW900m 130 survives! (see above)

" This unit was involved in a horrible head-on wreck with a gas-electric car on the Rochester Branch in the 1940s. Was rebuilt by the LVRR, however. Retired by CR 11 April 1985. At Igloo Cellar Site (former U.S. Army Black Hills Ordnance Depot) near Edgemont, SD July, 1987. Numbered CMC (Consolidated Management Corp.) 8657 and painted a light tan. I drove over to the depot on lay-off from BN in Gillette, WY, hoping to photograph the 8657. Alas, the manager refused permission so I drove back home in disgust. Never got back over there to photograph the unit, however. Oh well." - Paul J. Templeton

Alco S4 167 - sold to Steelton & Highspire RR #67 in 1969. cut down to slug #67 in 1977.

South Buffalo railway auctioned off some Alco switchers around 1990.

at least one was a former LVRR Alco S2. (Redden)

More Alco switcher information, from "Pontiac 59"

there's a few more on the Buffalo Southern - they have a string of former South Buffalo Alco S-types stored and one operable, believe at least one is a former LV unit (SB had 151, 159, 164, 165 r/n as 107-106-105-104). The other potential survivors include: one of the 5 that went to the B&O (150) went to Silcott and then to Southeast Coal, Irving KY (as #500), in 1974 (unknown past that point) and another (153) went to Youngstown Sheet & Tube in 1979 after serving as B&O 9146. Another one (158 ) went to Lone Star Steel #12 (Lone Star, TX) after T-I to Alco in 1965. S1 #117 last reported as Vulcan Materials #5789 (Geismar LA) 1978. Steelton & Highspire 66 was LV S4 166 (167 to S&H 67, then to a slug). From X2200S #76 for July-Aug-Sept 1982. Lehigh Valley disposed of all 539-engine power in the early to mid '60's; anything I didn't list either is listed as cut up or traded in with no further disposition.

The WNY Railway Historical Society's Alco S2, former South Buffalo #77, is not a former LV unit. -Scot

update - February 2, 2004.

I recieved a note from Patrick Connors. of the Buffalo Southern RR . concerning BSOR 104 & 106

"There has been much question as to the whereabouts of 104 and 106. 106 was indeed purchased by the BSOR when South Buffalo auctioned off their fleet of Alcos. It was dismantled at the steel plant. I say it this way because it was not completly cut up. The trucks and wheels were taken from underneath for spares on the other BSOR S2s and 4s. The block was removed for possible use in 107. While it was sitting on blocks with parts removed, it tipped over on its side....thus sealing it's fate. The remains were cut up...some parts taken to BSOR shops, while most of the frame and heavy metal scrap. The front nose and cab section are still together, though may get scrapped soon.

The 104, I am not sure of. There is an effort in the works to write a history of the South Buffalo with a complete roster. As the details are worked out, more light may be shed on this locomotive. It is possible that this unit ended up with Winter's Railroad Services S2's that are stored at North Collins, NY and may also have been cut up."

- Patrick Connors.

(note..LV 164 / SB 104 has been found! at Citisteel in Claymont, DE, )

LVRR Baldwins

The LV retired, scrapped or traded in all her Baldwin locomotives before Conrail.

the odds of any surviving today are very slim, so I didnt include them among the potential survivors,

although there is no disposition info for 6 LV Baldwins! so its (very remotely) possible a LV baldwin still lurks somewhere out in the wide world.

Me and the LV..

I was born in Sayre PA in 1969..10 years too late! ;) and was only 7 years old in 1976 when the LV "gave up the ghost".. back then I was basically unaware of trains..even though I lived within earshot of where the EL crossed over the LV! (oh to have a time machine..) I only have 1 memory of the LV, walking to Ithaca st. school in Waverly and crossing the LV main..seeing some BIG white engines..must have been snow birds! :)

I grew up in Waverly and began taking photos of trains around 1983-84. I never saw an ex-LV engine on Conrail..but there was still some PC black engines floating around then.. (saw a lot of Lehigh ghosts on the D&H however! :)

My first ever train photo was taken with a 110 camera, its a Conrail GP30, still in Reading paint, taken from the walkbridge in Sayre in 1983..I was 14. I soon took over my Dad's Agfa 35mm rangefinder! ;)

and managed to beat it to death over the next few years carrying it around the Valley on my 10-speed bike! (before I turned 16..the bike was my life!)

I spent a great deal of the mid and late 80's along the southern tier main in Waverly, on the walkbridge

in Sayre, and out in Binghamton.. lots of great D&H and Susquehanna Alcos still around back then! and billions of Conrail SD-40-2's. I was a member of the original "Sayre Railroad Museum" in the Sayre station back in the 80's.. We had a great model railroad in the museum! had Waverly, Sayre and Athens modeled on it.. and a fantastic collection of LV memorabilia..

I left for College in '87 (SUNY New Paltz) and the original museum was forced to leave the station sometime while I was away..the collection moved to storage in Towanda, and I just read a new group is re-forming a museum in the Sayre station! :) great news.. im hoping my train photos from '84 - '86 are still with the collection. I donated them back in '87. 3 big photo albums.. (I dont want them back..just want to know they are there!)

Also, both of my Grandfathers worked their whole working lives for the LV in Sayre, long before I was born. Daniel Lawrence - was an engineer on the LV, worked the Auburn division out of Sayre. I still remember his stories about running LV Wyomings! and Edwin "Polly" Kremer - my Mom's Dad..worked in the Sayre Shops..

here is the new group in Sayre.. the station is now owned by the town (Sayre)

Today I live in Rochester, NY. The land of CSX , R&S, and LA&L..still have Alcos around! :)
