The Portland Thorns emerged victorious as the fifth champion of the NWSL this past weekend. Defense was their specialty, and at the heart of it all was an outstanding goalkeeper who led the league in clean sheets. Adrianna Franch has really started to come into her own and was dominant this season. She is definitely deserving of our last WCW from the NWSL season.

5:43 AM - Oct 17, 2017 Twitter Ads info and privacy 67 people are talking about this Franch’s beginnings as a goalkeeper started in Kansas where she was a star in soccer and basketball for four years. She would take her talents to Stillwater, Oklahoma and blossom into an even bigger soccer star at Oklahoma State.
Franch became the starter as a true freshman and put together a record setting season. She set a school record with 11 shutouts and was First Team All Big-12. The former Kansas native would stay consistent over her next two seasons. By the time she decided to go pro, she was the best goalkeeper of the 2013 draft class.
The Western New York Flash would select Franch at pick No. 6, and she was impressive from the get-go. After a solid rookie season, she moved to the Thorns who were looking to add goalkeeper depth after Nadine Angerer retired. She spent the majority of last season as the backup, but when she got the chance to be the starter this season, she took full advantage.
This year was definitely Franch’s best season as a pro. She played more than 2,000 minutes and started all 26 games including the playoffs. Franch has already suited up for the U-20 and U-23 USWNT. She’s been one of the more highly rated prospects in America for a while now. With Alyssa Naeher at age 29 and Ashlyn Harris at age 31, Franch(26) will be poised to be the next USWNT goalkeeper for the senior team. She definitely deserves to at least be the team’s third choice in goal at the next World Cup.
It would absolutely be in Portland’s best interest to keep Franch for as long as possible. She’s been referred to as the next Brianna Scurry. If that’s really the case, then the Thorns, and maybe even the USWNT, will be in safe hands for years to come. Reflection: Upload your actual reflection here…..
