To facilitate and manage a safe learning environment, to challenge and encourage the students, to be a life-long learner, to be a positive role model, and to influence generations without end.
As a Teacher and a Curriculum Coordinator in the Osage Community School system, as the Director of Instructional Services and Elementary Principal for the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau School System, as Elementary Principal and Technology Coach for West Hancock School System, as the Director of Teaching and Learning/Elementary Principal for the Howard-Winneshiek CSD and as Elementary Principal at Hoover Elementary , I have undertaken various educational and leadership roles. As a teacher I have taught grades 2, 3, and 4. I have also worked as a Reading Specialist for grades 1, 3, and 5, a Reading Recovery Teacher for grade 1, and a Title I teacher for grades k-5. As the curriculum coordinator for Osage Community Schools and Director of Teaching and Learning for the Howard-Winneshiek CSD I have been responsible for writing the district’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP), Annual Progress Report (APR), and Adequate Yearly Progress documents (AYP). I have also been responsible for creating and implementing the professional development plan for these districts.
My responsibilities in these roles have included:
1. Providing positive and effective leadership that promotes academic excellence for students.
2. Serving as ESEA Coordinator: Title I, Title II, Title IV, Title V, Title VI.
3. Managing the procedure for new curriculum and instructional material adoptions.
4. Working to create a climate in which instructional support staff can feel a high level of success and job satisfaction.
5. Developing and managing sequential curriculum development, implementation and program evaluation in grades K-12.
6. Ensuring uniformity, consistency, and articulation between elementary, middle and high school.
7. Providing leadership for developing and implementing a balanced K-12 assessment program.
8. Assuming responsibility for reviewing, interpreting and reporting results of district, state and national assessments and performance data and for other evaluative measures used by the schools.
9. Assisting in the development and coordination of the sections of the budget that pertain to curriculum and instruction.
10. Keeping abreast of developments in curriculum and instruction, and furnishing leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the district educational program.
11. Assisting in the recruitment, screening, hiring and assigning of instructional personnel, as requested.
12. Guiding development, implementation, and evaluation of the district's staff development program, Information and Technology Literacy program, Education for Employment, and Gifted and Talented Education.
13. Working with the building administrators in the improvement of individual staff competencies, as requested.
14. Communicating the approved curriculum to the professional staff and maintaining a list of approved instructional materials.
15. Promoting instructional strategies, which improve student achievement.
16. Working with staff to link the Iowa Core Curriculum with curriculum, instruction and assessment planning.
17. Working with building administrators and department heads to maintain and publish current curriculum maps and materials.
18. Overseeing new teacher orientation and mentoring program.
19. Supporting the development, and recommends implementation, of policies and practices related to graduation requirements, approved courses, credit allowed, and related information.
20. Maintaining a curriculum library for staff use.
21. Administering grants.
22. Assuming a leadership role in developing curriculum for any course newly mandated by the legislature or the board.
23. Recommending the addition of new courses, grade placement of courses, credit allowance for courses, and graduation requirements.
24. Assisting, as appropriate, in the development of educational specifications for remodeling projects.
25. Interpreting the curriculum and its philosophy to the board, the administration, the staff and the general public.
26. Maintaining liaison and active participation with educational leaders in curriculum and instruction at local and state levels.
27. Meeting the demand and deadlines for information, state reports, audit information, and survey forms, related to curriculum and/or instruction.
28. Performing other duties required by law, the Superintendent or the school board.
