I am an applied microeconomist. My research focuses on development, economic history, culture and institutions, and the intersection of these topics with the environment. I received my PhD in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2015 and joined the School of Economics at UNSW Sydney later that year. I have previously held consultancies with the World Bank, and prior to my academic career, worked for several years in financial services. I now sit on the index committee for the Adasina Social Justice fund, and am an Associate Editor at Economic Development and Cultural Change.
My research has been recognized with the Paul Bourke Award for Early Career Research by the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the  Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA), both awarded in 2020.
My work often takes me to various corners of the world, including East Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific Islands. The banner photo you see above was taken while conducting fieldwork in the Solomon Islands.
