Foundations of Library and Information Science - MLIS 7000
This course introduced me to the history and foundations of the library and what information science entails.
Information Sources and Services - MLIS 7100
This course instructed me in how to be an effective reference librarian and how to facilitate patron usage of the library's reference materials.
Management of Libraries and Information Centers - MLIS 7200
This course focused on methods of managing a public library, including staffing, budgeting, and planning.
This course discussed the public library and its specific hierarchy and advocacy.
Cataloging and Classification - MLIS 7300
This course exposed me to the many methods of classification that have been used since the first libraries, and taught me the proper methods of cataloging materials in the library.
Multicultural Children's and Adolescent Literature - MLIS 7421
This class was a deeper study of children's and adolescent literature than I completed in my undergraduate work, as it focused on creating a balanced and multicultural library collection that would benefit all students.
Programming for Children and Young Teens - MLIS 7422
This course focused on creating effective public library programs for children and teens.
Applied Technologies in Library Practice - MLIS 7505
This course introduced me to the various Web 2.0 technologies applicable to both public and school libraries, as well as discussing the future of library technology.
Library Systems and Automation - MLIS 7550
This course focused on the specific technology used by all libraries, the Integrated Library System, and the many options available for choosing such a system.
Research Methodology in Education - RSCH 7100
This course covered the methods of educational research and the application of such techniques.
The MLIS Capstone evaluated the knowledge I had gained throughout my degree. This portfolio was a required part of the Capstone, as was my Capstone paper about developing strong school library programs.
Media Specialist Courses
Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology Integration - CIED 7060
This course provided instruction on developing curriculum in the school system, including evaluating the efficiency of the curriculum and developing teaching strategies.
Information Sources and Services - ITED 7201
This course focused on proper development of a school library collection and maintaining such a collection.
Administering School Media Centers - ITED 7203
This course provided instruction on how to properly approach and manage a school library, including collaboration and community involvement.
Instructional Design - ITED 7300
This course focused on collaboratively designing a curriculum with teachers to ensure the teaching of standards and the selection of proper materials.
- For my internship, I completed 100 hours of observation and participation in elementary, middle, and high school media centers and professional learning. These are several of the activities and projects completed during my semester-long internship at Seminole County Middle High School and West Bainbridge Elementary School. All activities are linked to the American Association of School Librarians standards.
