A brief sketch of Dr. Sanjeev B Sarmukaddam
He is M.Sc. in Biometry from Department of Statistics, University of Pune; D.B.S. (P.G. Diploma in Biostatistics) from ICMR's Institute for Research in Medical Statistics, New Delhi; M.P.S. (Master of Population Studies) from International Institute for Population Sciences, Bombay; and Ph.D. in Biostatistics (topic: Some Inferential Problems in Epidemiology) from School of Health Sciences, University of Pune. He has taught Biostatistics in many Medical Colleges/institutions and Universities (including National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore and Institute for Research in Medical Statistics [presently known as National Institute of Medical Statistics], New Delhi, as permanent faculty member for 3 years each and at Pune University as guest faculty for 5 years). On special invitation, he also lectured at Lawrence Education Center of Borgess Medical Center (arranged by Department of Community Health) of University of Michigan, USA in their ‘grand rounds’ (July, 2006). His presentation during International Biometric Conference (16-21 July 2006) held at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada and at many places of academic interest in London, UK (on “Need for and Modifications in Clinical Trial Methodology for Evaluation of Indigenous Treatments/Medicinal Drugs”) was appreciated. He also participated on invitation in symposium on “Controversies in Clinical Trials” (2-3 August, 2010) and in 11 th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine (4-7 August, 2010) organized by NIH’s National Heart Lung and Blood Institute with Rush University Medical Center [of Chicago] at Grand Hyatt Washington, USA.

He reviewed articles for journals like Bulletin of WHO, Int. Jr. eCAM, AJP, IJMR, Clinical Rheumatology, etc. He also regularly reviews articles {as vital member of ‘Statistical Advisory Board’ of} for PLOS ONE’ – a well-known international journal from San Francisco, California (USA). His co-authored book entitled “Medical Biostatistics” is published in 2001 by a New York (USA) based publisher Marcel Dekker, Inc. [later taken-over by Taylor and Francis group]. This book consisting of 664 pages has ISBN: 0-8247-0426-6. As only author, a famous medical books publisher namely Jaypee Brothers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, published a book entitled “Fundamentals of Biostatistics” in 2006. This book/volume being very different from the earlier one consisting of 266 pages has ISBN: 81-8061-814-5. Another book consisting of 412 pages entitled “Biostatistics - Simplified” is published in 2010 by the same publisher has ISBN: 978-81-8448-748-0. Another book entitled “Clinical Biostatistics” is published in 2013 by New Age International Publishers, New Delhi, with ISBN: 978-81-224-3047-9, pp287. The book titled as “Methods and Controversies in Clinical Trials” is being published by Centre for Behavioural Medicine, Pune. Since the ISBN is not allotted yet for some technical reasons, the book is not made ‘public’ (i.e. not made available in the market). He has been awarded a gold medal and Prof. B.G.Prasad award-1987 by the Indian Society for Medical Statistics, for best published paper (of the year) on Statistics applied to Epidemiology. He was a member/member secretary of many of the ‘Institutional Ethics Committee’s, member of ‘Scientific/Research Advisory Committee’, Ph.D. Advisory Committee and many ‘DSMBs’. He has also worked in a tribal area for 2 years. He was involved in planning, monitoring, analyzing and report writing activities of many national level studies/trials and sample surveys. He has developed and used many innovative gazettes/models for teaching few difficult concepts in statistics to medical fraternity. Two workbooks prepared by him are in use at a medical college and University's School of Health Sciences for Biostatistics/Biometry practical. He participated in relevant activities of Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta (a premier institute of statistics in world) like workshop on population genetics (1980), summer school on recent advances in computerized methods of data analysis (1982), A data analysis workshop for medical scientists (1985, as invited consulting biostatistician), Genetic Epidemiologic Methods for Dissection of Complex Human Traits (2009, in collaboration with University of Pittsburgh, USA).
