It was common in rural areas during the 1800s and early 1900s for women to give birth at home rather than a hospital, and Sand Run was no exception. Antrim church records (Bragues and Smiths), war registration records (Wilcox), US Census and historical accounts (Mitchell and Coles), and first-hand knowledge (Bertsches) identified most of the children born at Sand Run.
The 1880 US Census indicates that John Alan Vandergrift was a miner in Antrim, PA at that time, and war registration records indicate that all his children were born in Antrim except for the last child, Florence. Her death certificate and grave record indicate she was born in Delmar Township, not Duncan Township where Antrim is located. Sand Run is in Delmar Township on the road that connects Antrim to Stony Fork, and therefore she is included in Sand Run births.
