14th Annual San Diego Region Japanese Speech Contest

All applicants must:
1. Be currently enrolled in a San Diego County high school, community college or university
2. Not be native speakers of Japanese or have a Japanese parent (Issei) and in an environment where Japanese is spoken at home
3. Be a citizen of the USA or a permanent resident of the USA
4. Be a Japanese language student, currently or within the previous semester
5. Not have had more than six months of schooling in Japan after age six
6. Not have won the 1st place at a speech contest in Japanese in the past
7. The speech script is original and has not been read in other previous speech contests
8. Not read the speech and not use any supporting objects or props for your speech at the contest.
Judging Criteria:
Each speech must be about five minutes or less in length, but no shorter than three minutes. Choice of topic is open. Judges will base their decisions
on content and presentation of speech, and the interviews in Japanese with the judges after each speech presentation.
The highest total points awarded by the judges will be the winners. The first place winner of each category will also be the winners of the Consul General's Award.
If you have any questions regarding the judging criteria, please do not hesitate to ask the committee.
Note:
The top winners of the high school category in this contest retain the right to “apply” for the National Contest in May 2010 sponsored by Aurora Foundation.
The winner of this national contest will participate in the International Competition in Tokyo in July 2010.

Consul General's Grand Award (1st place Plaque) go to the first place winner from each category.

1st place winner: $300 and Dash, Personal Application Viewer by SONY for high school category and Blu-ray Disc/DVD Player by SONY for college/university category.
2nd place winner: $200, and Bloggie by SONY for each category
3rd place winner: $100 and STRIVE FOR A 5 by Cheng & Tsui
Best Effort Award winner: Robo-Sensei by Cheng & Tsui for each category
Most Creative Award winner: a Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar and a Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar by JPT America.
Penmanship Award winner: The Key to Kanji by Cheng & Tsui for each category
Humor Award winner: HelloKitty Watch Wall Clock by Tachibana Language Center
All contestants will receive the Certificate of Participation, the original contest medal, and a bag of a Contest medal,
Manekineko doll, a special pen by San Diego - Japan Marketing Services with our logo, ^_^
Recognized volunteers will receive a bag of a Contest medal, Manekineko doll, a special pen by San Diego - Japan Marketing Services
with the contest logo, Okashi by Ito Insurance and some other donations.
Volunteers for the day and teachers for the contestants will receive Manekineko and special pen with our logo.
