Description and goal of the project

The Project “Distributional Financial Accounts for Italy: deriving high-frequency estimates of the wealth distribution, merging macro and micro data" - resp. Prof. Salvatore Morelli - belongs to a wider project funded by the national research grant PRIN2022 - Wealth, income, and consumption inequality after COVID-19 – CUP F53D23003070001 (P.I. Prof. Tullio Jappelli at the University of Naples Federico II, Co-P.I Prof. Salvatore Morelli at Toma Tre Univeristy - collaborators Dr. Franziska Disslebacher and Prof. Annalisa Scognamiglio).

The goal of the project is to construct quarterly measures of wealth distribution in Italy that are fully compatible with macroeconomic data on household balance sheets. Our goal is to produce timely estimates of inequality using available microeconomic estimates of Italian household wealth from a variety of sources, such as the household survey, Forbes rich list, and inheritance tax tabulations, combined with official macroeconomic data from financial accounts, published on a quarterly basis. The estimates will distribute macroeconomic aggregates among different groups of the population, such as the bottom 50 percent, the middle 40 percent, the top 1 percent, and even the top 0.01 percent, and allow for the calculation of wealth growth rates for different socioeconomic groups in a way that preserves consistency with official macroeconomic statistics.

The ideal candidate should have expertise in the fields of income and wealth distribution, or economics of climate transition, carbon pricing, and taxation of income and wealth. An excellent knowledge of English is required and knowledge; Expertise with survey data analysis and national accounts data can be an asset. The successful candidate should also be familiar with programming languages for statistical and econometric analysis (e.g. in Stata, R, SAS, Matlab).
