Dear Orchestra Students and Parents,
This email contains information about our upcoming tour to California. Additional information will be provided at the parent meeting on May 16.
This year our orchestra students have the opportunity to go on tour to California. We will be traveling and performing with students from Springville High School, which should allow for rich collaborative experiences, new friendships, and a lower overall cost of the tour. A rough outline of the tour is as follows:
Monday, May 30
Load buses. Perform at Provo Towne Center Mall (for parents). Drive to St. George.
Tuesday, May 31
Perform at an underprivileged elementary school in Las Vegas. Drive to Anaheim.
Wednesday, June 1
Perform in California Adventure Theme Park. Spend the remainder of the day in the Disneyland parks.
Thursday, June 2
Spend most of the day in the theme parks. Attend a dinner show (Medieval Times) in the evening.
Friday, June 3
Participate in a recording session (or, possibly, have a second performance in the park depending on a decision yet to be made by the Disney park scheduler) backstage in Disneyland. Spend the remainder of the day in the Disneyland parks. Drive home.
Saturday, June 4
Arrive home at about 1:00.
The cost of the tour is $600, which covers transportation, lodgings, park performer passes, Medieval Times, and about half of the meals. Money is due April 29 – please talk to me if you have difficulty meeting this deadline. Because the park performer passes are not typical park passes, students who have season passes cannot use them for this trip (sorry! I asked, since it seemed like a good idea).
At this point we have about 30 Salem students and 30 Springville students participating in the tour, with 5-6 chaperones from each group. If your plans have changed and you would like to go on the tour or you are no longer planning on participating, please let me know ASAP so that room reservations may be adjusted accordingly. Rooming sign-ups are happening now and need to be finalized by next week.
Students are invited to join the Facebook page (Springville and Salem Hills Orchestra) to begin getting to know the other people going on tour. Students will also be given the opportunity to buy a tour T-shirt (for about $5). I encourage students to get to know some new people and make new friendships at both schools.
The performance program will consist of selections from the following list of music:
Irish Party in 3rd class
Russian Sailor’s Dance
Zipidee do dah (Disney Classics)
Fields of Gold
Slumdog Millionaire
Smoke on the Water
The Ludlows
Lord of the Dance
The Patriot
Schindler’s List
River’s Flows in You
The Incredibles
Music will be learned primarily during class, with some morning rehearsals to be determined at a later date. Students who are not able to come on the tour but would like to attend the rehearsals and learn the music are welcome. Combined rehearsals with Springville are as follows:
May 16, 3:30-5:15 at Springville High with a light dinner to follow. An important parent meeting will be held from 6:00-6:45 during which final tour details will be presented and approved. Please plan on having at least one parent and all students at this meeting.
May 26, 3:30-5:30 at Salem Hills High with a snack and time for student meet and mingle
May 27, 10:00-1:00 at Springville High, with lunch provided
May 28, (Morning – TBA)
Hopefully that answers most of the questions you’ve had about the tour. If you still have other questions, feel free to ask.
I enjoy working with your students and look forward to having a wonderful tour, filled with fun activities, new friends, and most of all, great music and learning!
Paul Wells
