    • 5th: In order to add fractions that have different denominators, we must convert the fractions so that they have the same denominator, or a common denominator. Yesterday students learned how to find the common denominator for two fractions. Today they learned how to convert the fractions by multiplying them by another name for one (1) so that each has the common denominator. Since we can multiply any number by (1) and get the same number as the answer, we can multiply our fractions by a name for (1) that will change the fractions so that it has the denominator we want. Names for (1) that we might choose are 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 5/5, 6/6, etc.

After looking at the last test results and discussing the test with the students, I concluded that most of them need some test-taking strategies or an opportunity to walk through a test step-by-step, discussing each problem first so that they develop skills for reading and taking tests. I am doing that with this test to make sure each student understands foundational principles of taking tests. Fifth-grade students took the first half of the test today with this format: 1) together we read the question and identified what the question is asking, 2) students did their own work silently to answer the question.

  • 3rd: multiplication is another way of expressing repeated addition. 5 + 5 + 5 is the same thing as three groups of five or 3 x 5. Students completed pages 7-10. Homework: worksheet 1-1, front and back.

  • 5th: exponents express how many times to multiply the base by itself. In the number 103 , 10 is the base and 3 is the exponent. It is read "Ten to the third power". A number with an exponent means multiply the base by itself the number of times of the exponent. So the number 103 means multiply 10 by itself 3 times: 10 x 10 x 10, which =100. Students did pages 5-8 and the front side of the worksheet 1-1. Homework: worksheet back, review of lesson about exponents.
