2023
I have good news and bad news.
Good News is after I shared the latest update to the website I got several e-mails wanting to get together.
Robin Clifton (A.K.A. Robin Sackett) e-mailed and said she would like to attend a future gathering.
She will be turning 70 this year.
We wish her many more years to come and hope to see her one day.
Bad News:
Robert Sackett Jr
passed away June 29th 2021
Blood Cancer.
May 13,2023
We had lunch at Lucille's Smokehouse in Long Beach and met Andy Franz.
Former Electrical Department Employee
Andy could answer any question you had about any electrical problem and was always there to help you with a smile.
He was the best of the best at Sackett's.
He is retired now and enjoying life in the IE.
Special Thanks to Robert King for his help with reservations at Lucille's Smokehouse in Long Beach.
2022
Over the Memorial Day weekend I hosted a dinner party with Thad, Robert, Frank, Joe, Willy and their family members.
We all got through Covid-19 and are doing well. It had been a long time since we got together, we got caught up with our lives since we last met. We had such a good time that we talked about getting together again later this year.

I worked at Sackett & Peters from around 1978-1982ish. Started as a Courtesy Clerk, before moving to Housewares and then finally Lumber. I worked with Heidi Smith, Andy Ytuarte, Mark Isaacson, Larry Robinson, Bruv Chadwick, Chris Wakefield, Kelley Aguirre, Nancy Ermigarat (?), Mike Maeda, Bob Lastufka, Jeff Belangi (?) and Miles Crane among others. It was a fun place to work, especially the Lumber Dept. We’d make bongs and other paraphernalia out of brass fittings, clear plastic tubing and window screen material. Also had blow darts made out of PVC and furring nails! We’d hide up in the back stock area and shoot nails at each other across the yard. Miles Crane was the little old guy, called everyone “Chiefy” or “Chiefy Baby”! LOL. He was a character. Howard Eisenman was the first manager that I remember and then Pat Cavanaugh. We’d laugh at his always tight slacks! I also worked the tree lot and remember Robin coming by to check out all of us younger guys. We all thought she was smoking hot! Larry Robinson was a cool dude. He became a police officer and I once saw him at the shooting range near Anaheim Stadium, years ago. I see Andy Ytuarte once in a while, and am friends with Kelly Aguirre on FB, but other than that haven’t seen the others I mentioned in decades. I was told that Mike Maeda passed away. Too bad. He was always cool to me. He had another friend of his, also Japanese, that worked at S&P but I don’t recall his name. Good times.
Regards,
Mike Hernandez

I grew up in Whittier from 1964 - 1977. I saw this and just wanted to say that as a small boy I have very fond memories (nothing specific) of going to Sackett and Peters hardware store with my father. I always loved to work with my dad around the house and part of that was going to the hardware store for supplies. Sackett and Peters was his "goto" hardware store!
Thank you!

May 2019
We got together at Maggie's Pub. Joe, Robert , Thad, Scott Brown, Jeff Vaka, Suzi Moon and Shirley Moore showed up.
It was good to see some new old faces. We all enjoyed the evening and looked forward to getting together again.
Scott Brown shared some old photos of Bob Sackett and the old hot dog stand (See Photo Gallery)
December 2017
The turn out in December was low at the last get together. Sheryl Moore and myself and my wife were the only people to show up. People got the time wrong and some were sick.
I got a new phone number for an old connection to the old Nursery and Lawn and Garden crew.
Hopefully next get together will be LARGER.

June 2016
Well things have picked up this years we got a new e-mail.
Hi,
My cousin told me about this site which brought back some good memories. I saw the pic of Sheryl Moore who I worked along with her sister Cheryl Moore (C-Moore). I worked there back in 1980-1981. The R.E.L (Robert E. Lufstaka) party flyers, he copied R.E.O Speed wagons logo for that. I'm going to dig around and see if I can find some old pics. Great seeing this site up.
Larry Robinson -S&P employee
Hi Pat,
I found this old pic from around 1981. It was my last day before going into the military. Back then if you were leaving you got tossed into the pool on your last day. I think Cheryl Moore took the pic. Anyways I'll continue to look for more pics.

Well Christmas came early! We got a new e-mail:
John Marin
I just discovered this website and couldn’t help but to join in….
If you grew up in Whittier, you had two jobs: 1) Mow the lawns 2) Work at Sackett & Peters.
S&P was more than a hardware store. It was a place where we kids could earn a few bucks and, more important, become part of the S&P enterprise. I think I was about 16…hmm, that would be around 1969, Bob hired me to work in the sign shop. The resident sign painter at the time was a family friend, Russ Larson. If you recall, the sign shop was in a back room of the furniture store. Russ was a tremendous artist and taught me how to “roll your brush”, paint “Show Cards” and how to silk screen…all done with Paul Harvey on his transistor radio. I learned a lot and I thank Russ Larson for his tutelage.
After about a year, I was recruited by Larry Overhausen(?)….(I’m sure I’ve screwed up his name) to help with the monthly tabloid. I was given a drafting table across the street in the Colima office where I would draw trash cans, hoses, you name it for publication in the tab. Larry also showed me how to write copy, do layouts and “paste ups”. He was a very nice man. I also worked in the same office with Jon Peters. We didn’t speak very often, but I learned to respect him as an intelligent, soft-spoken gentleman.
Of course, there was the FUN SIDE of working at S&P. Yeah, we all had a crush on Robin but, at the time, the Store Manager’s name was George Something-Or-Another. George wasn’t right in the head. He had a twisted sense of humor and was always plotting something deviant. I loved the guy. Since I worked across the street, most store employees weren’t aware that I worked for the company.
He would call me and say, “I’m interviewing a girl for the check-out counter. Pretend you’re a customer and can’t pay for your purchase”. I would do so and George would come flying over the counter!
We’d roll around in the aisle while the poor trainee stood in shock. Gawd, it was fun.
I still live in Whittier and remain active in the community. I’m currently the President of the Rio Hondo Symphony Orchestra. But, looking back into the rear-view mirror, my time at Sackett & Peters reminds me of my Whittier heritage and fond, very fond memories.
Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year.

October 2015
Well the Fall 2015 get together was good and hot! There was a bunch of crew from the 70's and 80's that showed up. We shared some stories and had a few beers! My camera was acting up and the pictures I posted were blurry (See the Photo Gallery) I plan on bringing the wife's nice camera next time. I hope that we still have enough interest to keep thing going for 2016!
I will be posting a full page ad from the 70's next month, thanks to Kevin Calcagnie.
August 2015
I am on Facebook trying to promote the site!

We got a new e-mail!!!!!
Thank you Tracy Petit for the receipt (It is posted in the Photo Gallery)
Please read his e-mail.
If any of you worked at Nothrop please send me an e-mail and I will forward it to Tracy.

Hello S&P Former Employee(s):
I was having a yard sale last weekend and came across the attached receipt in a book. I couldn't recall at first the type of store this was, so I looked it up. The purchase may have been for a Eureka vacuum cleaner. I discovered S&P are out of business.
During the research I found your website and I thought your group may get a kick out of seeing an old receipt. It somehow survived the following moves:
Whittier to St. Paul, MN
St. Paul to Berkeley, CA
Berkeley to Walnut Creek, CA
Walnut Creek to Richmond Point, CA
Richmond Point to Manchester, NH
Manchester to Londonderry, NH
Londonderry to Pleasanton, CA
Pleasanton to Tracy, CA
Tracy to Grafton, OH (Cleveland area)
Now the receipts fade away after a year, but S&P survived the test time and thousands of miles.
Have any persons in your group that are former Northrop employees? I used to work in Pico Rivera and was on the B-2 Bomber project. My former work location on Washington Blvd is now a shopping mall.
Best regards,
Mr. Tracy Petit

June 2014
Well after a long drought we finally received 2 NEW e-mails
from former employees Kevin Calcagnie and Bob Krohn from the 70's
Please read the e-mails below and check out the photos from Kevin Calcagnie in the the Gallery.
Hi Pat,
Found your site and it brought back memories, even though you guys are clearly after my time.
I started as a courtesy clerk at Sackett & Peters when I was 16 back in 1971. $1.65 an hour. My first raise was a nickel an hour. I was taking home about 20 dollars a week working 9 to 6 Saturdays and 10 to 5 Sundays while in high school. Back then the LPG was a furniture store, and the main store had an automotive repair facility complete with service bays.
I served under the regimes of the revolving door of store managers at Sacketts throughout the 70’s, including Jake Jacoby, Marty Muffs, Rich Reynolds, Terry Sanford, Bernie Kilcoyne, Ray Labuda, Jim Cavanaugh, Paul Moore and Howard Eisenman. (Did I leave anybody out?)
Rudy, Bob and Ted were all there too. Great place to work while in high school and college. The hours were flexible, Rudy was one of the few employers that would let kids wear their hair long in the early 70’s, and there were always dozens of friendly cashiers working there.
I was eventually a nursery salesman and then a nursery manager, and ended my S&P career as supervisor in 1978.
I’m still in touch with Ed Pearson (74-81), Mark Varallo (77-79) and Robin Sackett, who gave me most of the photos I sent. The iphone photos are from a complete monthly S&P circular that I saved all these years for no apparent reason.
Kevin Calcagnie
E-mail from Bob Krohn
Ha-Ha! Just ran across this website.
I worked there from about 1971-1973
Knew Kevin Calcagnie. (but never knew how it was spelled)
Gosh it would be nice to compile a list of names. I’m getting a little dim but can remember a lot of the faces.
Sometimes I’ll put a name into Google just to see.
Was trying to look up Rob Sackett when I found this site.
Would love to see what people have done in the intervening years.
What is the REAL story is behind the “big heist”
Sackett’s was my High School experience and still am in contact with several ex-co-workers.
light bulb fights during Christmas,
fork lift races,
punching your timecard in but going back to the breakroom,
“Tarping” at closing,
Rob doing “store security”. (Once saw a friends Father arrested for shoplifting!)
Making blowguns in Lumber/Carpet&Tile,
Cashier’s mini-skirts,
All the totally makeshift storage areas we created. They must have paid off Whittier fire inspectors.
Etc, etc, etc.
The fun never ended.
Gee I wonder if the Box Crusher still lives somewhere??
