Sine Utilitate
The rubric for the series stems from Vitruvius' definition of Architecture (Utilitas, Firmitas, Venustas), and alludes to my background as an architect.
The constructions in the series utilize principles of tensegrity and have tension in common as the organizing principle, seeking to explore its inherent ambiguity of holding things together while being pulled apart.
Tension is a force originally in the domain of Physics, but immediately translates into the realms of Psychology, Sociology, and Politics as an element that affects personal well-being (e.g., dilemma, stress), interpersonal relations (e.g.,jealousy, conflict), and efforts for dominance and balance in society (e.g., strife, struggle) -- subjects, in short, of all Arts through the ages.
