Marathon Stories
Houston Marathon Virtual 2021 jan 16, 2021
Due to the pandemic. The marathon had to go virtual. But it turned out great with help from my friends... We planned out a 6.7mi loop out in Seabrook on the roads. I did it almost 4 times.... just enough for the gps watch to say I'd run 26.2 for HOU!
Houston Marathon 2017 jan 15, 2017
After a rough Houston 2016 where I went up to a time of 2:42. I was struggling after my NYC Marathon beatdown. So this year I focused on my hometown and favorite race, The Houston Marathon. My goal was to get back to the 2:30s. The weather is gonna be warm and muggy. It's gonna be tough. Can I bounce back? ...
50,000 runners on the streets of NYC. It's a tough course, hills, and bridges; a legendary
course through the 5 boroughs, ending in Central Park. I've never been to the Big Apple before. And the Mets are in the World Series. Let's go...
Time for Houston Marathon again. I felt good for the most part. We got good weather. Another go for a Sub 2:30. Lots of elites in town looking for Olympic Trial qualifying time plus the US Half Championships in town too. So gonna be exciting. Start the race, Let's go!
Well I'd never run Chicago. I thought I had a decent shot at Masters prize money so I could potentially pay for my trip. A marathon major on a famed fast course, why not? You're only low 40 yrs old once. So, I traveled solo and cheap- stayed in my first Hostel and hit the streets of Chicago with 40,000 fellow runners.
Miami Marathon 2014 feb 2, 2014
I know this is crazy. I ran Houston Marathon 2 weeks ago. But my friend on the Lockheed Corporate Marathon team said come down and run with the team, we can cover most of your expenses. So why not. I've never been to Miami. And I love running. Sounds like fun.
Every since I went sub 3 hrs at a marathon. I wanted to find one to win. I wanted to break the tape at the long distance one time. To see what it felt like. I got it! Somehow lightning struck. A magical trip to DC for my daughters 5th grade class trip. Unbelievable!!
Ok. You gotta do Boston right. We saved up some money, and got an unexpected lump sum so it was all systems go for a family trip to Boston. Really our first family vacation. We had a ball and I tried my hand... er feet at the famed hilly Boston course on a warm Spring day.
I'm back after a 2nd year of serious training and local racing. I'd learned lots of things and recently joined the Bay Area Running Club (BARC). One of the things I'd learned and loved was racing in packs, it's a lot of fun. Helps motivate and encourage. Brings out the best in everyone. Working together; trying to tame the marathon.
Well this is where it all started, the midlife crisis, the last chance.
I made the decision to train hard and give it a go for a sub 3hr marathon. In the past I had run the Houston Marathon 12 times, but I wasn't really a serious runner. I didn't study it or try to get drastically better, it turned into something I just did every year, often just to keep the streak alive. I'd only done minimal training in the past, but this year- I was going for it... it was no excuses for a sub 3.
