Mission statement

The Computing Society of the Philippines Special Interest Group on Women in Computing (or simply CSP SIG WIC) supports, celebrates, and advocates for the full engagement of Filipino women in all aspects of the computing field, providing a wide range of programs and services to CSP members and working in the larger community to advance the contributions of technical women.

Our advocacy hinges on the recruitment and retention of as many women in computing, dissemination of information to enhance educational and career opportunities for women in the field of computing, and celebration and recognition of the accomplishments of women in computing.

The 7th ACM Women in Computing-Philippines Celebration 2021 (ACM WiC-Ph Celebration 2021) will take place on October 9, 2021. The 7th ACM WiC-Ph Celebration 2021 will bring together women from academia, industry and government to freely share their ideas and opinions on the emerging technologies and issues in Computer Science (CS), Information Technology (IT), and Information Systems (IS).

The CSP SIG WIC calls for the submission of extended abstracts in relation to the celebration theme and sub-themes of:

1.         Increasing diversity in computing courses and careers

2.         Encouraging students to consider computing in their future

3.         Recruitment and retention of girls and women in computing courses and careers

4.         Initiatives that explore the contribution of computing to society

The CSP SIG WIC in cooperation with the ACM Women in Computing is launching the CSP SIG WIC Virtual Meetups.  The Lecture Series will be a monthly online talk organized by the CSP SIG WIC and intended to build community among women in computer science, information technology, and related fields by discussing current work in research, applications, or industry. Specific objectives include but are not limited to the following:

1.       To share knowledge about current academic work, innovations, applications, or industry practices.

2.       To encourage young women to consider computer science, information technology, and related fields as possible career options.

Computational Modeling and Simulation of Auxin-Driven Parallel Venation Development. Modeling and simulation have greatly contributed in research advancements in different fields and in various interdisciplinary studies. One application is in the exploration of Auxin-dependent vein formation. In this study, grammar-based (L-Systems) and agent-based (intra- and inter-cellular) models are presented to demonstrate how parameter changes affect vein formation in an Auxin-dependent model of parallel venation development. L-Py and NetLogo were used to implement models of different scales. Behavior space analysis was used for validation by replicating known phenotypes and producing expected emergent properties. Behavior searches were conducted to maximize fitness for measuring the mean Auxin-level of cells at the final step of the simulation runs.

Applications of Finite State Machines. One of the most challenging courses to teach is “Theory of Computation” / “Automata Theory and Formal Languages”. Very few faculty members are interested to handle the course and very few students find it interesting due to its mathematical nature. This talk will focus primarily on finite state machine and its application on various areas like circuit design, modeling reactive systems, user interface design, workflow modeling, AI game engine, among others. The goal is to make the course more interesting for both faculty and students.

AI and Ethics.  With artificial intelligence becoming a buzzword in the technology market, concerns are also being raised on the ethics guiding the developers who build these technologies, as well as the ethics guiding the behavior of the intelligent robots themselves. Borrowing from medical ethics, it is commonly accepted that AI ethics is also guided by the basic principles of beneficence (aiming to do good), nonmaleficence (not to do harm), autonomy (allowing the human to decide independently), and justice (equitable distribution of resources). How easy is it to adapt and adopt these supposedly basic principles in AI?

All CSP regular members will be eligible (1) to vote, and (2) to be elected as a member of the Board.  Kindly present your CSP Official Receipt to show proof of your CSP membership (through a separate membership payment or through the registration to the PCSC 2020 main conference) and enlist upon registration to the ACM WIC-Ph celebration.

Members of CSP will elect nine (9) initial members of the CSP SIG-WiC with the following terms of office:

- three (3) for three (3) years as  members of the board

- another three (3) for two (2) years as members of the board

- another three (3) for one (1) year as members  of the board

Successive elections of members of the board will have three (3) years as members of the board of the CSP SIG-WiC. This ensures continuity of service of the board and disruptions are avoided.

The nine (9) initial elected members of the CSP SIG-WiC will vote among themselves the officers with the following positions: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and 5 members of the Board.  Activities of the CSP SIG-WiC will be voted upon and approved by the CSP SIG-WiC board and submitted for approval to the CSP board of directors.  The Chair of the CSP SIG-WiC becomes a non-voting member of the CSP board of directors, and is obligated to attend both face-to-face and online meetings of the CSP board of directors.

About the Speakers

Cherry Lyn Sta. Romana finished BS Computer Science and MS Computer Science at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños (UPLB). For 11, years, she served as a Computer Science faculty member and coordinator at the University of the Philippines Cebu. She also served as faculty member of the University of the Philippines Open University and affiliate faculty of the University of the Philippines at Los Baños. She has been a member of the Technical Committee for Computer Science of the Commission on Higher Education for the past 8 years, served as national officer of the Philippine Society of IT Educators for 12 years, and board member of the Cebu Educational Development for IT.  During the past 16 years, she has served as Dean of the College of Computer Studies of Cebu Institute of Technology – University, where she also completed her Doctor in Information Technology.

Maria Art Antonette D. Clariño is currently an Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) teaching Numerical and Symbolic Computation and Interactive Computer Graphics among others. She obtained her BS Computer Science (Magna Cum Laude), MS Computer Science, and PhD Computer Science minor in Botany from UPLB. She was a DOST-PCASTRD scholar during her Master's and a DOST-ASTHRDP scholar during her PhD. Her paper presentations in local and international conferences as well as publications in reputable journals range from digital image analysis, computing education, natural language processing, to modeling and simulations. She is currently a Regular Member of the National Research Council of the Philippines and is serving as a member of the Board of Directors for the CSP SIG-SPice.

Charibeth Cheng is the Associate Dean of the College of Computer Studies at the De La Salle University. She is also the co-founder and Head of Research of the tech start-up Senti AI. Specializing in the area of Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning, Chari works on developing computational models, tools, and electronic resources that will make machines process, understand and generate text written in natural language, including Filipino. She has published papers in AI, NLP, information systems, and other related interdisciplinary venues. She received her Master's and PhD in Computer Science degress from De La Salle University.

The Filipina CEO Circle (FCC) is an association of women chief executive officers whose companies count as part of the large corporations in the country.  The FCC is a unique organization as its women members are not business owners nor “children of owners” and are those who rose through the corporate ranks purely on the basis of performance.  The association was set up in 2015 with the vision of “being the voice of successful Filipina women business leaders and connecting successful women CEOs who are committed to mentoring, inspiring, and empowering promising women in business.  As they are grateful for the positions that they hold and opportunities given to them and their advocacy is to share this with today’s youth that they too may aspire to advance to top positions in the corporate world.  They recognize that an enlightened and empowered youth is the key to social and economic transformation.

Maria Jihan de Guzman Sangil (or better known as Frei Sangil) is the co-founder and current chief executive officer of the research and development company, Layertech Software Labs, Inc. She is currently on her Masters degree in Big Data Analytics in the University of Liverpool.  

Prior to founding Layertech, she has work experience in a multinational cybersecurity company, and in developing software for various business clients. Frei has worked as a technology consultant for figures in the government and in the business sector, specializing in strategic deployment of innovation and technology in systems optimization.

Frei has recieved various certifications, national and international awards for her works in innovation and technology, such as the 2016 iCOUNT award by UNAIDS and YouthPact for MediX Aids Mapping Game, 2013 Global Innovation Competition Global Finalist in Hung Hom Hong Kong for Mileaf Medical Diagnostic Network, 2015 Global Innovation Competition Gold Award for Balangay: Cloud Information System for Disaster, 2016 National eGov Award for Customer Empowerment with Legazpi city, 2017 Best Climate Practice award by International Center for CLimate governance and most recently, European Union Civic Technology for Democracy award in Brussels, Belgium, among many others.

Julie Ann Salido.

Julie Ann A. Salido is a PhD student in Computer Science at De La Salle University since 2016 as a recipient of CHED K-12 Transition Graduate School Scholarship for PhD in Computer Science. Currently, she is working on her dissertation on Skin Cancer Detection with Artifacts Removal and Noise Reduction using Deep Learning. As a grantee of the Science and Engineering Government Scholarship Program (June 2010-May 2012) sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education, she obtained her Master of Science in Computer Science degree from the Department of Computer Studies, Algorithm and Complexity Laboratory at the University of the Philippines – Diliman. At that time, her research interests focused on bioinformatics, information technology, and applied computer science. Since 2016, she is an assistant professor of Aklan State University and has served administrative posts in various capacities as Chair of Monitoring and Evaluation, ICT Coordinator, and Instructor at Aklan State University. She has published research articles on computer graphics, computer vision, life sciences and bioinformatics in high impact journals such as IEEE transactions, ACM and Elsevier that are Scopus indexed.

The Computing Society of the Philippines, Special Interest Group – Women in Computing (CSP – SIG – WiC) [and co-organized by the Association of Computing and Machinery (ACM) - Women in Computing, the Capitol University, and the National University  (NU www.national-u.edu.ph) Philippines] held a Women in Computing-Philippines 2018 Celebration. It was held on March 17, 2018, 01:30pm to 04:45pm as a post-conference of the Philippine Computing Science Congress 2018 at the Capitol University at Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.

The WiC event was attended by both faculty members and students in information technology education from different schools and universities.  There was no registration fee.

Dr. Rachel Edita O. Roxas is the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the National University  (NU www.national-u.edu.ph), Manila, Philippines.  Dr. Roxas obtained her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Diploma in Computer Science from the Australian National University, and her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science cum laude from the University of the Philippines at Los Banos.  Dr. Roxas also completed her Ph.D. in Education major in Educational Leadership and Management in 2013 from the De La Salle University.  She gained top #7 (among 57,723 examinees) in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (or LET) conducted by the Philippine Regulatory Commission in 2007.

Dr. Susan P. Festin is the founder of the Computer Security Group, one of the research groups of the Department of Computer Science of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, that focuses on the enhancement of the security of enterprise and mobile applications through research in cryptographic algorithms, message protocols and the latest developments in cryptographic attacks.

Dr. Mercedes T. Rodrigo is a full professor of the Ateneo de Manila University.  She teaches at the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science.  Her areas of specialization are educational technology, intelligent tutoring systems, and affective computing.  In 2011, she established the Ateneo Laboratory for the Learning Sciences through a grant from the Department of Science and Technology's Engineering Research and Development for Technology program.  She is currently studying students' behavior and affect while using intelligent tutors, educational games, and other learning software.

Young Women in Computing. The goal of this talk is to share some of the experiences of young women who recently completed their master’s or doctoral studies.  This talk describes their backgrounds, their research, and the questions that interest them.  It presents some of the challenges that they confronted while doing their studies.  It will end with some advice that might help younger women as they embark on their own studies and careers.

Ms. Cherry Lyn Sta. Romana is the Dean of the College of Computer Studies of the Cebu Institute of Technology University. She obtained her BS Computer Science and MS Computer Science degrees from the University of the Philippines Los Baños. She is currently completing her Doctorate in Information Technology. She is currently a member of the Technical Committee in Computer Science of the Commission on Higher Education, Vice President for the Visayas of the Philippine Society of IT Educators and board member of the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology.

Thank you all for contributing to the great success of the hosting of the Women in Computing Celebration 2016 held at Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines!

Thank you to our participants, our speakers, to our local organizers headed by Dr. Jeanne Alcid of PSU, and our WiC coordinator, Ms. Susan Caluya of NU, to ACM WiC, and of course, CSP for the encouragement and for the kind support!

We had an ocular inspection a day prior the celebration.  The venue was well-prepared and the organizers were working on the give aways.

On March 26, the day came. The students were pouring in - there were more than 300 participants.

Then the program started with the Vice Dean of the College of the Sciences. The three speakers gave their inspiring talks. The program was ended by the closing remarks of the President of the CSP.

Dr. 'Didith' Rodrigo shared her story: "Finding and building a research practice requires discernment. I spent quite literally years looking for my niche.  A continuous process of contemplation, conversations with friends and colleagues, as well as series of very fortunate events helped me find a research area (artificial intelligence in education) that I enjoy and that has helped me help others build their own research practices."

Dr. Roxas shared her story: "I shared the reasons for going and persisting in the area of ITE in the Philippines considering also global trends, and their eventual contribution to the knowledge generation in the country. I further shared about my area of specialization in Natural Language Processing and its practical applications in data mining, machine translation and corpus building."

It will be held on March 16, 2016, Wednesday, 8:00am – 12:00nn as a pre-conference of the Philippine Computing Science Congress 2016 at the Skylight Convention Center, Puerto Princesa, Palawan.  Note that the venue has changed from PSU to the Skylight Convention Center, Roxas Street, Puerto Princesa City. Also, please take the Skylight along Roxas Street and NOT the one along Rizal Avenue.

In this regards, we would like to invite you to participate in the conference. We had a warm welcome at USL-T, Tuguegarao, Cagayan City.

With a school gymnasium waiting to be filled ... I suddenly felt some butterflies in my stomach ... stage fright, I guess, as well, as excitement, mixed together, hosting an event that is one year in the making.

Attendees slowly trickling ... and trickling, until we were able to fill the place with some visitors from all over the region, the country, and even, overseas.

Susan, Rey and I gave our respective talks.  (Thank you to our speakers!) I learned later that we had around 300 participants!

And ended the program well.

Then we had another surprise --- the PCSC students had the chance to meet with Mr. Dado Banatao!

We would like to have a WiC celebration again! ;)

This involves a group dedicated for women from different academic institutions and the industry who are joined together to increase women's participation in computing and technology. The main objectives of the initiative are the following:

The Computing Society of the Philippines will be hosting a pre-conference Women in Computing (WiC) celebration and also the launching of the WiC Initiative of CSP.  The pre-conference WiC event aims to gather all technical women in order to collaborate and share expertise to the public, also to gather as many as possible, women of new generations to expose the computing field and support them in pursuing computer science and information technology.

The pre-conference WiC Celebration will also raise to the public the possible research areas/ideas for computing and technology, it will discuss benefits as well as possible careers for women in the computing industry. The specific objectives of the pre-conference event are as follows:

            1.  To provide participants with insights about careers in computing and technology.

            2. To provide assistance to students participants financially and in academics.

            3. To raise awareness about the field of computing and technology.

The 7th ACM Women in Computing-Philippines Celebration 2021 (ACM WiC-Ph Celebration 2021) will take place on October 9, 2021. The 7th ACM WiC-Ph Celebration 2021 will bring together women from academia, industry and government to freely share their ideas and opinions on the emerging technologies and issues in Computer Science (CS), Information Technology (IT), and Information Systems (IS).

The CSP SIG WIC calls for the submission of extended abstracts in relation to the celebration theme and sub-themes of:

1. Increasing diversity in computing courses and careers

2. Encouraging students to consider computing in their future

3. Recruitment and retention of girls and women in computing courses and careers
