(April 24, 2007)--Roxanne Henkin, Janice Harmon and Elizabeth Pate, professors in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching in the UTSA College of Education and Development, recently were named co-editors of the journal, Voices from the Middle.
Henkin, Harmon and Pate will oversee the journal of the National Council of Teachers of English until 2011. They just published their third edition. From its inception 15 years ago, Voices from the Middle has been the premiere journal for middle-level educators.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for us to contribute to conversations on literacy at the middle-education level and to interact with teachers from all over the world," said Henkin. "We want the journal to bridge theories to teaching, as the articles will offer specific classroom practices that are grounded in research."
Henkin, Harmon and Pate introduced several changes to the publication including revised columns and sidebars, a peer-review process for article submission and a new section on technology in education.
In late March, the three editors were keynote speakers for the annual San Antonio Council of Teachers of English meeting. At the symposium, Henkin, Harmon and Pate highlighted their favorite teaching ideas culled from recent issues of the journal, offered insights into the editing and publishing process, and offered suggestions for teachers interested in writing for the publication.
