Paper Wilber

This is my attempt at creating a template for a Wilber paper toy.

(Wilber is the GIMP mascot. Wilber is not a fox, not a wolf, not a dog, not a cat, it's a GIMP. Yeah. At least that's what is said, somewhere on the GIMP site :) Ok, there's a cat too on the photo)

At the moment (27 feb 2009), the template is maybe a little complex. Lots of little parts. But I'm not sure it's possible to make it in less parts. (well... maybe the front/back and flanks of the body could be made in a single piece, but then it's hard to put everything on a single page for printing)

You'll find the templates at the bottom of the page.

The SVGZ ones are the source, they can be opened with Inkscape.

They're released under the GPL (v3), and contributions/improvements are welcome :)

I may add some other color versions in the future.

Additional instructions:

It's better to start by downloading either the "blank" source, either the pdf with informations. (Even if you don't print those, they can help you).

    • Cut the pieces with a cutter/scalpel, it turns out to be a bit simpler than with scissors.
    • Pre-crease along the folds with the back of the cutter (or with anything thin and strong but not sharp) before folding.
    • Start by gluing the tab #1 of the ears (and let them dry while you do the rest).
    • The square at the bottom of the head is supposed to be cut and removed. It makes the head assembling much easier, as you have access to the inside of the head.
    • If you're doing the colored version and want to add the tongue, cut a slit on the mouth, and slip and glue the tongue there.
    • When the head is done, add the ears. Put glue under the ear tab #2, and over the #3. Then slip the ear tab #3 inside one of the slit there's on the top of the head.
    • Press inside the head. And press the tab #2 over the head. Repeat for the 2nd ear. (and don't mix Left and Right ears :p)
    • You can then close the head by gluing the big square under it. (don't mind the goatee on the image below, this is just a slightly different version I made)
    • For the body, start with the front/back and the flank parts.
    • Fold and glue the triangle tabs (#1) on the arms.
    • Then put glue on the tabs #2, and stick them on the flanks of the body.
    • Then put glue under the tabs #3 and glue them on the "shoulders".
    • You can now put glue on the shoulders/under the head, and stick the head and body together.
    • For the nose: cut along the outside outline, then put glue under the nose part and fold it in two. When it's dry, cut along the nose. (and glue it on Wilber's face)
    • This one is the finished version of Wilber-goat - hence the horns, hooves and goatee ;)
