About Us 簡介

Story of Rong-Rong Choir

Rong Rong Chorus was established in the spring of 1976 in Bellevue, Washington state. The goals of the choir are: to assemble friends who love singing, to express feelings with Chinese songs, to reminisce, to share homeland culture, and thus to promote the Art of Chinese Music. Moreover, Rong Rong is like an extended family to its members, and members interact in harmony. Thus the choir’s name: “Rong Rong”, holds meanings of “harmony and joy”.

In the early days, Rong Rong began with several couples who would gather fortnightly on Fridays when they would have fun singing together. The Choir became a formal association in the 80’s when it began interacting with other similar associations. In 1982 and 1983, the group was invited to join “Christmas around the World’ performances, and in 1984 spring, sang for the exhibit of “7000 years of Chinese Cultural Artifacts”.

In 1985, the Choir conductor, Irene, and her spouse Prof. Lee, together with the Chinese Women’s Association and the Chinese Engineering Association, organized a “Mother’s Day Musical Concert” on May 11th in the hall of the School of Music at UW. That day Ms. Tzelin Chen played the guzheng (zither), Ms. Yuyun Cheng performed a traditional dance, and there was a reception afterwards. It was Rong Rong’s first major performance and it was successful, winning applause from all. The members were confident about future performances. Those early members still currently present in the choir are: Grace Soong, Dora Hsu, Ann Lin, Lingling Suen, J.T. Lin, De-Yu Lang. In 1987 a concert was held with the themes “A Belated Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Rong Rong Choir”, and “Fund Raising for Seattle Women Association Scholarships” which were for meriting American Chinese Students. There was even an auction after the performance. The audience numbered more than 600 and the concert was a success. The members in that concert who are still present are: Grace Soong, Dora Hsu, Ann Lin, Lingling Suen, J.T. Lin, Y.L. Ling, De-Yu Lang.

From that time onwards, Rong Rong members didn’t just have fun, but also worked to hold at least one concert every year, and was acknowledged as a choir of high standards. The Choir took part in annual national festivities, and the Northwest Regional Folk-Life Festival. In 1988, it sang with “Yuen Dao Choir” in Vancouver, Canada. It was the Choir’s first trip out of the country. In 1989 it worked with King County in a Washington State fund-raiser for charity. In 1990, the Choir visited Twisp’s Methow Valley, WA, in a cultural exchange concert. In 1991, it held a concert with soloist Hong-Kwei Chen. In 1993, the Choir joined forces with Tung-Hsin Choir Society of Washington D.C. and performed the whole set of the “Eternal Lament” by Tza Huang. In 1994, Rong Rong Choir was invited to Lake Chelan for performance. In 1995 it performed with the Chinese Orchestra and Ching Ching Choir. On that occasion there were more than a hundred performers on stage, and about 900 in the audience; it was the largest concert for Rong Rong. In 1996, Rong Rong had its “20th Anniversary Concert”, and from that year, summer camps were held for the next three years. Since the famous song composer Zhenfen Huang had continuously provided Rong Rong with his songs over the years, the Choir held a concert in his honor in 1998: From China to Seattle – A musical Collection by Zhenfen Huang. In 2000 the choir held a concert with The Vancouver Chinese Choir Association, Canada. The two choirs visited each other, and in that year, the choir recorded their songs in a professional recording studio.

2011 is the year of the 35th anniversary for Rong Rong. It is also the 100th anniversary for the Republic of China and the Choir has taken part in celebration activities. The Choir is using “Look back and give thanks in harmonious joy” as a theme for its anniversary concert. A special feature booklet will be printed, with photos and articles from members, as a memoir to the pains, sorrow and joy encountered over the years.

Members of Rong Rong come from Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China. There are engineers, architects, science researchers, scholars, lawyers, accountants, doctors, nurses, computer specialists, private enterprisers, educators, real estate agents and housewives. Previous conductors include Sophia Ho, Betty Tonglao, Irene Lee, Phyllis Lee, Fu-Yu Lin, Joyce Lin, Rebecca Wu, Mark Chang, Julia Tai, One must give credit to the latest conductor for raising the standard of singing of the choir, besides acknowledging the hard work that members have put into their practice. Half of the members have been in the choir for 10 or more years. Another feature of Rong Rong Choir is that the members are contributors to their community. More than 10 members have been leaders in Chinese associations (Engineering Association, Women’s Association, Chamber of Commerce, Chinese School). Many have been leaders in the Choir. Many are talented, being able to perform in ways besides singing. Members also organize activities to keep healthy and maintain friendship, such as hiking, trips to the country side, picnics, birthday celebrations, potlucks. Many members are couples. Members are like family to each other. As its name suggests, Rong Rong Choir is a harmonious and joyous choir.

Composers

Huang, Zi

In 1935, Huang founded the first Chinese Orchestra – the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra . Well-known musicians like Luting He, Ying Zhu , Dingxian Jiang , Sheng-shih Lin , Xueyin Liu , etc., all were his students. Since Huang had been composing patriotic songs for the Nationalistic Party ever since he began learning Western music, he was considered to be bourgeois by the PRC, and his works were dishonored. His students, like Luting He, were also severely criticized. Huang regained recognition only after the country underwent political reforms in the 1980’s, and then his contribution to the music in China was acknowledged.

In his life Mr. Hwang had created more than 2000 pieces of music. During his life’s work of music promotion, he never charged any copy-right fee. He abided by a philosophical motto regarding music: “Great music must be easy”. In his will, he had a statement that allowed free access to his musical work, for printing, performances, production, recording, video-making or use as background music. All his music could be sold without restriction.

Lin, Fu-Yu
