All graduates of an accredited general surgery training program by the Philippine Society of General Surgeons should pass the Philippine Board of Surgery (PBS) certifying examinations (written and oral).
All general surgeons to be should have an idea of the PBS and what are their usual expectations, how to pass, and how to prepare for the certifying exams.
They should know these things as early as they start their general surgery residency training program and have at least 5 years to prepare.
Here are some tips (will continue to develop this page).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the factors associated with a successful outcome in the Philippine Board of Surgery (PBS) certifying examinations (written and oral).
METHODS: The examination records of candidate examinees who applied to take the PBS certifying examinations from 2006-2009 were reviewed. Successful outcome was defined as passing the written and oral examinations on a first attempt. Various factors (both continuous and non-continuous) were analyzed regarding their association with a successful outcome.
RESULTS: There were 370 candidate examinees with 137 (37.0%) successful outcomes. The following factors were found to be significantly associated with a successful outcome: younger age, previous performance in the RITE examinations, taking the examination within a year of completion of residency, training in a university-based program and undertaking subspecialty fellowship during the examination year.
CONCLUSION: These results may provide useful information for the PBS and other stakeholders in general surgery training.

The Philippine Board of Surgery is an independent non-profit organization which was founded on November of 1969. The organization is dedicated to providing board certification to aspiring surgeons who have met all the requisite standards of education, training and experience in the field of surgery.
In 1976, the Philippine College of Surgeons designated the Philippine Board of Surgery as its examining arm in General Surgery. Beginning December 1977, PBS certification became a requirement for fellowship among General Surgeons to the PCS. In 1980, the Board initiated the In-Service Examination for surgical residents in PCS accredited programs. The examination evaluates the core knowledge as well as clinical skills of residents at different levels of their training.
In the same year, the Board approved a policy that beginning 1985, only graduates of fully accredited programs of the PCS will be eligible for the certification examinations. Subsequently, the practice of preceptorship as an additional requirement for graduates of partially accredited programs was also discontinued.
In 1997, the Board passed a resolution that all PBS past Chairmen shall be Ex-Officio members and may attend any board meeting but with no voting rights. In 1999, the newly formed Philippine Society of General Surgeons, a surgical specialty under the PCS umbrella enshrined in its constitution, that only Diplomates of the PBS can become fellows of the PSGS.
