The Story of Food

The Story of Food in the Human Past explores what humans ate in the past, and how studying ancient food helps archaeologists understand what it means to be human. The book is aimed at general readers interested in the role of food in human evolution and past societies. As you read the book, I hope you pick up some interesting facts about ancient food, understand a little bit better how archaeologists reconstruct what people ate in the past, and reflect on how your food choices, traditions, and experiences relate to those of people who lived in different places and times.

This book is based on an undergraduate course that I teach at Centre College called Paleokitchen: The Archaeology of Food, and so it is also aimed at students taking similar anthropology or archaeology courses. This page contains resources for instructors and general readers who are interested in learning more.
