Diseworth Churchwardens Accounts
The Diseworth Churchwarden's Accounts 1838-1879
In 1975, whilst sorting through some boxes of old papers at a 'Sunday market' on Melton Airfield near Leicester, I discovered three tattered old notebooks. They took my fancy because of the copper plate writing on some of the pages and so I bought them.
One of the books was a child's exercise book with pages of hand written repeating letters and phrases (unfortunately it's falling to pieces now). The second book is more modern and appears to be (as I remember) the minutes of the 'Belton Horticultural Society' meetings.
The final book which this page is all about was the Diseworth Churchwardens Book. This is also rather flimsy and brittle so I decided to re-write it into a computer file so that it could be referred to without damaging the original (I did this in 1990 whilst I had some spare time in between 'moving house'). The result of all this typing can be seen in the following links.
"So... what is it?"
Diseworth is a small village in the north west of Leicestershire, England. This book was the hand written accounts of the Church Wardens for the years 1838-1879. I have no knowledge of the ins-and-outs of church administration... I just like the book because it's a link to a way of life long since gone.
I simply sat down and typed in exactly what is on each page - this includes the layout and spelling mistakes! There are many variants on the spellings of certain words, for instance 'paraffin'. Some of the names are also spelt differently throughout the book. There are also many variants in style and quality of writing as different people made entries. Most is in ink, however some is written in pencil. Quite a few pages are blank.
The only symbol I have amended is the 'pounds' sign - I have used '$' (dollar) instead. My own comments have been added [within square brackets].
The original book is now in The Record Office for Leicestershire and Rutland - accession DE 7441.

Notes
Mills : the entries marked ?? Mills are all the same signature and a little
difficult to decipher the first letter which could be either 'N' or
'W' the second initial is more than likely a 'J'
Paraffin : note the different spellings/misspellings of the same word!
Cook/e : The Rev C.F. Cooke seemed to miss the 'E' off of his name here and
there.
C Danvers : this name (page 132) has been written-in somewhat elegantly by a
different person than the rest of the page.
