Robertsbridge Aviation Society and Museum - Sussex

The Robertsbridge Aviation Society and Museum is a non-profit making organisation run entirely on a voluntary basis, with the sole aim of catering for the interests and activities of the aircraft enthusiast. The museum collection was founded in 1973 and includes exhibits covering civil and military aviation, past and present. Many of the items on display are of Sussex origin, and come from the sea, (often trawled up by fishermen), digs (always under the strict adherence to guidelines and avoiding sensitive sites) and objects donated by the public. The Society is a member of the British Aviation Preservation Council. Donations of new exhibits and parts for preservation are always welcome.A number of cockpit sections are in the collection, including English Electric Lightning F3 (XP701), Sea Vixen, Canberra (WE173), Hunter, Meteor T7 (WA630) and Tiger Moth (G-AIV

W). Click here to view XP701's photo gallery. There are a large number of aircraft engines in the collection, including Merlin, Jumo, Conway, Derwent and many others, a total of 28. There is also a rear turret from a Lancaster. On a smaller scale, there are uniforms, maps, photographs, documents radios and many components from a great many aircraft and associated items. The Museum also has over 5,000 original photographs of many different aircraft. A permanent exhibition has been opened at Newhaven Fort.Back in 1964, the Society's founders were also members of the Royal Observer Corps who wanted to keep up to date with aircraft recognition. The Society was originally named 'The Robertsbridge Aircraft Recognition Society' with meetings being held at member's homes. To reflect the wider scope of the activities and interests of the membership, the Society changed its name to its current title.Public viewing is on the last Sunday of each month (2.30pm to 5.00pm) except November, December, January and February. Viewing outside of these times can be arranged by prior appointment. Society evenings are informal and held on alternate Monday evenings. An annual open day is held in August. Bush Barn is just off the A21, just north of historic Robertsbridge village. The entrance is on a steep hill in the middle of an 'S' bend and can be difficult to see. Click here for a map.
