Double Ph.D. Programmes

A brief introduction to the University of Chile and our research work can be downloaded here (Talk at the University of Antofagasta) January 2020)

The Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, University of Chile has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the University of Nottingham to offer a dual-degree PhD Programme in Electrical Engineering. This agreement is valid until October 2023 and the coordinator at the Chilean side is myself.

We have also got strong collaboration with the University of Waterloo and we have started a cotutelle Ph.D. programme with them in 2019. In this case there is not a memorandum of agreement between both universities, but a cotutelle agreement for each student. An example is here .

I have got a strong collaboration with Jon Clare, of the Power Electronics Machines and Control (PEMC) group, University of Nottingham, and several of my Ph.D students have opted for this dual Ph.D. degree option (see below). However, this agreement is not restricted to the PEMC group and it is open to other research areas. More information about the research at Nottingham can be downloaded here.

One of my students has already obtained the dual PhD degree (Uchile/U Waterloo) at the Power and Energy Systems Group (see below) , University of Waterloo. He is supervised by Prof. Mehrdard Kazerani and Dr. John Simpson-Porco (Toronto University)

Matias Diaz ,(graduated in 2016) . He received the Dual Ph.D degree, University of Nottingham-University of Chile with the thesis Control of the modular multilevel Matrix converter for wind energy conversion systems. Since 2018 Matias is a professor at the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Santiago (Chile). For his Ph.D. thesis he received the ”Best Engineering Thesis” award from the Chilean Academy of Science.

Chilean Supervisor Roberto Cárdenas-U.K. Supervisor Patrick Wheeler

Claudio Burgos Mellado (graduated in 2019) . He received the Dual Ph.D degree, University of Nottingham-University of Chile with the thesis Control strategies for improving power quality and PLL stability evaluation in Microgrids . During 2019-2021 Claudio is a Research Fellow at the Power Electronics, Machines and Control Group, University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. He is now a lecturer at The University of O'higgins, Chile. For his Ph.D. thesis he received the ”Best Engineering Thesis” award from the Chilean Academy of Science.
