Our Country has a vast network of roads that carry 70% of the freight traffic and 85% of the passenger traffic. The total number of registered motor vehicles under various categories was around 600 Lakhs in 2002, and it is growing at the rate of nearly 10% every year. However, the development of roads and growth of transportation-network infrastructure is very slow as compared to the rapidly growing traffic. India's booming economy has lead to an increase in the number of vehicles, and technological advancement has brought new and better safety features in our vehicles. But, our drivers lack the training to tackle dangerous and hazardous driving situations with safety as their priority.
Glimpse at the statistics reveals that more than 4 Lakh accidents take place on road and more than 92618 lives are lost due to road accidents every year.
In India about 83.5% of road crashes are attributable to driver's fault.
The planning commission estimated the accident related social costs for the year 1999-2000 as Rs. 55000 crores which constituted 3% of the G.D.P. of that year. This figure does not take into account the costs associated with pain, grief, and trauma experienced by the surviving members of the families of accident victims. (Ref.
