Poem Composed Entirely from Last Lines of Howie Good Poems
Eye:
sing to me, if you have the heart,
softly, quite softly,
and delicately into a love poem
almost too beautiful and broken to repeat.
And the little children cry in the streets,
Eye.
Oh, do not cry. The paper burns, but the words fly free.
If I close my eyes or leave them open,
Eye,
God will forgive me. It is his profession.
This isn’t Hamlet, you know.
And someone somewhere down the hall laughs,
as if for luck.
Eye,
that is my testimony. Write it down.
