History of the Regina City Ladies Golf Championship

1921 - 1962 Tournament day 1 was a stroke play qualifying round to determine flights, championship, 1st,   2nd e.g. with the following rounds being match play. Each match will consist of 18 holes. The challenger in each match will have choice of course. The first player drawn will be challenger. Entry fee $.25. Other competitions included team Match, long Drive, putting, blind drive long and short approach.

- Winner was presented with A. C. Froom Trophy.

1963 – 1995   Tournament changed to three rounds stoke play, with the exception of 1988 and 1990.This season for the championship, as well as the individual flight awards, will be decided by 54 holes of medal play. The low 96 qualifiers will advance to the second and third rounds of medal play with the field divided into flight of 16. Entry fee is $5.

-1968- The tournament was once again a week long qualifiers day 1 and match play the remainder of the week.

-1978-Team challenge trophy, Low net competition for clubs, best 4 low net scores day 1.

-1980 - MARGUERITE SLACK Memorial Award City Ladies Golf Championship Low Net Senior Player, donated by Husband.

-1981 – First year three course event. It’s the first time the women have staggered their city championship over three major Regina courses rather than stick to one location. The decision was made at the end of 1980 tournament with the majority of participants voting to adopt the system

-1990 – First year green fees included on registration fees. The tournament was reduced to two days as a trial to reduce the expected cost. The tournament was at the Murray and Regina. Entry fee was $30.

1996-2008   Tournament changed to a two round format.

-1997 – Boundaries were extended to include outlying areas like Emerald Park and Green Acres to participate.

- 2000- MARGUERITE SLACK Memorial Award City Ladies Golf Championship Low Net Senior Player changed to seniors 65 and up. Margaret (Esson) Elliott Trophy Winner Senior Division introduced to award low gross senior score.

-2005-New amateur division award Sponsored by Margaret Elliott. 

-2006- Boundaries extended to include Deer Valley and Flowing Springs to participate.

-2008- Boundaries extended further to include clubs within 100 kms of Regina. 1st year Champion was not a Regina resident. This was deemed to be acceptable to increase participation in the tournament. Some of the committee wondered what would happen if a person from Moose Jaw won the city championship, “I said I will just have to play better next year.” (Joy Dobson Regina Leader Post 15/07/2008) “The more competition we can get into the tournament the better.” (Kim Walker, Regina Leader Post 16/07/2008.)

2009 -2019 Tournament renamed to Regina Ladies Open Golf Tournament inviting all women holding a valid handicap to participate.

-2009-All trophies from the Regina City Women’s championship (Regina City Ladies golf Championship plaque, MARGUERITE SLACK Memorial Award Low Net Senior Player, Margaret (Esson) Elliott Trophy Winner Senior Division, Regina City Ladies Golf Championship Amateur Division and team challenge) were donated to the Saskatchewan Spot Hall of Fame.

-2009- MARGUERITE SLACK Award now net for seniors age 65 and older now sponsored by Royal Regina Ladies’ Section.

-2014-new Joanne Goulet Memorial Trophy sponsored by her family awarded to the tournament Champion.

-2015- The MARGARET ELLIOT AWARD - Overall Low Net is annually sponsored by the Wascana Golf and Country Club Ladies Section.

-The tournament is a participant in the Saskatchewan Women’s Order of Merit.
