Welcome to the Regent Motorways website!
It's amazing how new information still comes to light on a regular basis! Malcolm Hicks contacted me recently to let me know of another driver not on my list- Tony Hicks- Malcolm's brother. Also Joe Fitzpatrick (Ex- Hardings) emailed me that he is in contact with Marilyn Perks who's first job after leaving school was in Regent's booking office! Many thanks to both Malcolm and Joe for the information.
Just a few weeks ago , Lynne Andrews an old friend from way back in the 1960's, put me on to two photos of Regent coaches that I'd not seen before. These now appear on the latest news tab on the site. Thanks Lynne!
Someone asked me a while ago what made me take the trouble to research and develop this website. There are two reasons- Firstly it is a tribute to my father, Les Butler, who was a driver for Regent for many years and loved the job. Secondly, once I started the research and met some of the lovely people who had worked for Regent with my Father, I was hooked! I realised I was writing a story of gentler times, when a coach trip to the "seaside" or "The Villa" was an important event in people's lives.
Regent Motorways was founded during the 1930s in Redditch, Worcestershire by Harry Jakeman. The business prospered for many years under the stewardship of Harry, and later his son John.
Following the untimely death of John Jakeman in October 1965, the business entered other hands and eventually folded in 1980 following a disastrous fire at the Regent depot which was by that time located in Station Yard Alcester, Warwickshire.
This site will be developed over time and I hope that anyone connected with Regent Motoways will get in touch and share their memories and photos.
Enjoy!
Mike Butler
