The Other San Francisco
shedding 40 year old skin
heavy and worn
from 9 to 5 workdays
wasting away day by day
protecting fortunes
of the one percent.
shedding skin
trying to find the poet
who once lingered
here and there
never a care
walking in the rain
in a city of riches
named for St. Francis
who stayed for a while
then ran away
with dreams and beatniks
wearing only a beret.

Newly Arrived in Big City
So alone
wearing the same clothes
everyday.
No fear
of people saying
he wears the same clothes
everyday.

Rooms in an
old hotel
how many times
has the bed
become the resting place
for excited, anxious bodies
as man enters woman
sending sounds of springs
echoing through soft walls
to awake the pain
of the lonely?
How often did the table
provide writing space
on its scratched surface
for postcards to jealous friends
‘having a great time,
wish you were here,’
words embedded
in ten different languages?
How long for the mirror
to page through its memory
of well-kept images
of the lovers, of the lonely
all passer byes
in the old hotel?
