Other Evidence of Professional Capacity

[Research portfolio requirements from the ICS website listed in italic, while the evidence of my compliance is plain type, often as a subpoint in bulleted list.]

At the discretion of the student and the advisor, other material may be included in the portfolio. A professional vita of employment, professional presentations, reviewing of papers for conferences and journals, competitive fellowships, patents, teaching, and service on committees or as graduate student representatives contribute to the candidacy decision. Letters of reference may also be included. Students should report all forms of research, teaching, and service to the community and to the discipline when preparing their portfolios.

As part of my interest in sustainability, I joined the Sustainable Saunders UH student group. Sustainable Saunders seeks to make Saunders Hall as sustainable as possible, and to use the lessons learned in that process to make the rest of the campus more sustainable. My particular focus has been on energy, and I have been regularly attending the energy group meetings. The energy team has surveyed the occupants of Saunders Hall about their work environment, worked to secure both wind and solar generation facilities for the roof, initiated air conditioning shut downs during the early morning hours, and removed excess florescent lighting that was making most occupants unhappy and wasting electricity. The result of these changes is an annual reduction in energy usage of $146,000.

In 2004, I received Hawaii's Top High Technology Leader award from Pacific Technology Foundation in 2004. This annual event recognizes leaders in the Hawaii's technology sector, and I was one of many awardees (40?) that year.

I am a member of the Association for Computing Machinery.

I was a student volunteer at the Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC) 2009.

I also have a professional resume from previous work in industry.
