I attained Fellowship of Society of Indexers in 2011 and have been an Accredited Indexer since 2005. Further details can be found in my entry in the Directory of Professional Indexers.
My experience of the training course is described in the following articles, published in the Society's journal The Indexer:
Why Indexing (background to my decision to train as an indexer). This article is now available as a download, part of the Newcomers: a selection of articles for those new to indexing special issue of The Indexer.
I have prepared over 300 indexes covering UK politics and history, the European Union, Africa, development studies and international relations.
I am an active member within the Society of Indexers, serving on several Committees and attend workshops and conferences in order to keep abreast of developments. I have a degree in Librarianship and first worked as a special librarian at Sussex University and then for an international company in Belgium for several years before moving back to the UK. I then spent seven years on the European Desk of the House of Commons Library and a further six at the European Parliament’s UK Information Office. Following the birth of my daughter I worked on a variety of projects as a freelance European researcher before turning to professional indexing as a career.
I am also a Trustee of the Friends of Little Chalfont Library, which has been responsible since 2007 for running our award-winning local community library, funded and staffed entirely by local volunteers. I am lucky enough to be responsible for the book purchasing budget of £7,000 per annum. As well as popular fiction we also buy audiobooks, large print and a good range of non-fiction titles. My work in the library was featured in an article in the Daily Express in January 2019.
