Hi, my name is Julie Raynel Koch. My friends and family call me, Raynel. My publishing name is J. Raynel.
I am passionate about strategic communications and believe it’s a tough job, but rewarding when creativity and effort harmoniously align.
My expertise is in understanding an organization’s business and communication needs to develop strategic plans to increase audience engagement and revenue. My communication style adapts to various audiences whether Department of Defense, scientific, engineering, consumer, business to business, or not for profit.
I am a United States Navy veteran. At sea, I served as a Photographer’s Mate aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) from 2000 to 2004.
In my current and pervious Navy civilian roles, I am responsible for the command's strategic communication vision for internal and external communication strategy; visual information; and social media policy.
My leadership style is to lead by example through taking action and demonstrating what needs to be done to keep my team organized, on the same page, and contributing equally.
As an advisor to senior level leaders and staff, I provide guidance for crisis communication to identifying key messages and drafting purposeful content for intended audiences such as letters, news releases and speeches.
Prior to working for the Navy as a civilian, I held the responsibilities as a chairperson, a volunteer position, for an art fundraiser known as, “The Tile Program” at Torrey Pine Elementary in La Jolla, California. I raised more than $5,000 during the 2012-2013 school year. These funds were used to supplement the elementary education system for the 2013-2014 school year.
My first civilian role after being honorably discharged from the Navy, which I am forever grateful, was with the U.S. Army as a staff writer for an installation newspaper, “The Wheel” at Fort Eustis, Virginia. It provided the opportunity to hone my news writing skills and marry my photojournalism and graphic design abilities to become the strategic communicator I am today.
