  • "Does Foreign Aid Effectiveness Depend on The Nature of Recipient Government?" with Hubert JAYET

We examined the relationship between the policy choices of recipient governments and aid effectiveness. Previous studies have shown that aid effectiveness depends on several factors without taking into account the policy choices of recipient governments. In order to fill this gap, we constructed a theoretical model whose characteristics are quite similar to Boone (1996)'s model. Based on some comparative statics and simulations, we found several results that confirm that aid effectiveness depends on the policy choices of the recipient government. Indeed, our results have shown that the benefits that can be obtained (or foregone) from foreign aid are largely determined by the policy choices of recipient governments. Moreover, our results have also shown that a government that is less averse to inequality use aid to improve the welfare of the population. Indeed, he makes fewer transfers and taxes less. Finally, our results indicate that the size and structure of the group of potential recipients influence the choices made by the government.

  • "Should I Stay or Should I Go? Foreign Aid and Migration" with Hubert JAYET

In this paper, we assess both the role of government in managing development aid, the role of government in migration decisions, and the effectiveness of aid in achieving its migration objectives. To clearly distinguish between the effects of development aid and the role of government on the management of migration flows, we developed a theoretical model that is an extension of the Epstein, Hillman, and Ursprung (1999) model. Based on some comparative statistics and simulations, we found two main results. Firstly, the effectiveness of aid depends on both the policy choices of the recipient government and the nature of the recipient government. Secondly, the policy choices of the recipient government influence both migration decisions and the labor supply of individuals. One originality of our work compared to previous studies is that we have built a theoretical model capable of analyzing both the role of the government in managing development aid and the effectiveness of aid in achieving its migration objectives.

  • "Does Foreign Aid Affect The Location Choice of Migrants?" with Hubert JAYET

We re-examine the migration-development aid nexus. While some works have examined the relationship between development aid and migration, previous studies have not reached a consensus on the impact of development aid on migration. Moreover, the empirical results obtained in these studies sometimes rely on weak evidence. Thus, in this chapter, we have re-examined the question of the impact of development aid on migration and supplemented it with the location choices of migrants. Using a theoretical and empirical approach, we found four main results. (1) Bilateral aid from a donor country to a recipient country has a weak effect on the migration rate from the recipient country to the donor country; (2) the impact of bilateral aid and total aid on the bilateral migration rate is different from one country or region to another; (3) development aid may not help migrants cope with higher migration costs. Indeed, when individual's financial resources are limited, and the amount of aid is insignificant relative to the costs of international migration, potential migrants have a preference for destinations the cheapest compared to the most expensive destinations. (4) When migrants move from one region to another, they tend to prefer countries with which they share a colonial relationship, a common language, or the existence of diaspora.
