Thomas Ranger was born 1610/1615. He married Anne Clarke 13th April 1634 at Northiam. They had 7 children. Elizabeth 1634, Mary 1637, Edith 1640, Agnes 1643, William 1645, Anne 1647, Thomas 1649.


William Ranger was born 1645, Northiam Sussex. He married Jane Paris 28th June 1670 at Northiam. They had 6 children, Thomas 1671, Jane 1673, Mary 1675, William 1677, Jasper 1679, Jasper 1688.


Thomas Ranger was born about 1671, Northiam Sussex. He married Susanna Moore 31st May 1692 at Northiam. They had 4 children, James 1697, Thomas abt 1693, Susannah 1695, and unnamed abt 1699


James Ranger was born in 1697 in Northiam, Sussex. He married Elizabeth Bayle on the 15th May 1720 at Stone in Isle Oxney Kent, England.

They had 9 children that we know of, Thomas 1724, James 1723, Jasper 1725, Elizabeth 1727, Mary 1729, Josiah 1731, William 1735, George 1737, Christopher 1739.  


Thomas Ranger  was born in 1724 in Northiam, Sussex. He married Elizabeth Honess on 16th February 1749 in Maidstone, Kent, and they settled in Cranbrook in 1759.

They had 3 children, their second child, William  was born 1753 and he married Ann Dabson in 1775, They had 7 children. Their seventh child, Joseph was born 1788 and he married Mary Ann Crocker, and they lived at 97 High Street Hastings where they had 8 children. Their sixth child Joseph was born in 1822 and he married Maria Furner in 1849. Joseph and Mary's fifth child,William was born 1818 and he married Mary Ann Osborne in 1843 at St. Mary in the Castle, Hastings.


William and Mary Ann had 9 children, their sixth child Kate was born 1856 and she married Philip Mare Fossett Cole. This becoming the Ranger and Cole families connection. ( Click on to Cole family History in the navigation bar)


Other children of William and Mary Ann Emigrated to Australia. 


James 1723 married Elizabeth French in Ticehurst, Sussex on the 3rd of April 1755 and they had a 8 children, Elizabeth 1758, Mercy 1760, Betty 1762, Jemima 1764, James 1766, Samson 1769, Keziah 1774, Samuell 1776.

Samson born 1769 in Beckley Kent. He married Ann Susans in Beckley Kent on the 4th January 1796 and they had two children, James 1798 and Jemima 1809.

James born 1766 married Mary Wilding in Pearsmarsh, Sussex on 8th February 1792 and they had 4 children, James 1792, Mary 1794, George 1797, Jane 1799.

Silver Eagle

Six separate Ranger families, all blood relatives, emigrated form England to Australia. The first families arrived in 1839 on the "Alfred" the "Juliana / Morayshire" and "Mary Hay"  followed in 1876 by the second group on the "British Nation" and then followed the third group in 1880 on the "Silver Eagle", and then the fourth group in 1883 on the "Dallam Tower" and finally the last group arrived in 1882 on the "Selkirkshire"

***Mary born 1794 married Thomas Milgate on 29th September 1818 in Iden Sussex and they had 9 children, two of which died prior to the families voyage to Australia. ( Thomas Marchant 1822-1825, William Sampson 1825-1831 )

The 7 remaining children were James 1819, Jane Jemima 1820, Eliza Mary 1823, Sarah Maria 1828, Esther Keturah 1831, Lydia Matilda 1832, Spencer Samuel 1834. They emigrated to Australia on the "Juliana" which was shipwrecked off Mouille Point Cape Town. They all survived and continued their voyage on the "Morayshire" and "Mary Hay"


***James 1798 married Hannah Street Miller in Beckley Kent on the 26th of October 1819 and they had eight children, seven of whom were born in England. They emigrated to Australia on the ship "Alfred" arriving Sydney on 18th January 1839. The lineage of each of the children can be found on the Rootsweb link above. 


***Alfred born 1852 was first married to Elizabeth Maria Cole and they had 2 children, Alfred William Holwell and Edith Bessie. After Elizabeth died in 1878, Alfred married Philadelphia Edwards and they emigrated to Australia, arriving at Maryborough Queensland on 15th May 1880 on the "Silver Eagle".

( Note: Elizabeth Maria Cole was the daughter of Thomas Holwell Cole & Ellen Bowman Stabb. Thomas Holwell Cole was the author of "The Antiquities of Hastings and The Battlefields")

***Alfred's brother Horace had already emigrated to Australia four years before in1876 with his wife Elizabeth nee Prior, and their infant son, Horace arriving at Maryborough Queensland on 2nd December 1876 on the "British Nation"

***Alfred's other brother Ernest born 1850 with his wife Ada Mary nee Pearce, with sons Ernest and Leslie arrived at Maryborough Queensland on 2nd December 1882 on the "Selkirkshire" two years after Alfred and his family.

Both Horace and Ernest and their families remained in Queensland while Alfred and his family settled in Yass in New South Wales.

On 20 January 1902 Alfred was appointed a second class Sherrif's Officer for Yass and surrounding districts. He died there in service in 1914.

Edith Bessie Alfred's daughter, married Theodore Lambert Chambers in 1907 in Yass and they had 7 children.


Alfred William Holwell Ranger (Alfred's son), married Maude Thornber Gledhill in 1899 at St. Peters Sydney and they had 5 children. and so the Ranger family was well established in Australia.

Maude Thornber Gledhill's family can be traced back to Henry De Gledhill who was born about 1292 in Barkisland, Yorkshire. See link below for Gledhill Chart

Alfred William Holwell Ranger and Maud Thormber Gledhill's second child, Alfred Charles Holwell Ranger was born 1903 and his 

first marriage was to Agnes Phoebe Wassell in 1925 and they had two children :-

Philadelphia Ranger and Kevin Ranger

His second second marriage was to Ellen Theresa Hooper 1n 1939 and they had two children :-

Judith Ellen Ranger and Malcolm Holwell Ranger

Ellen Theresa Ranger nee Hooper's  mother was Annie Mary Mussell, the daughter of Margaret Christina Clarke and James Mussell.

James was the Captain of the ship "General Wool" which was wrecked in a gale at Cape Hawke New South Wales in 1868. There were no survivors.
