Sea Snot Interview 11 June 2021.
Dr. Long gave an interview to KPFA 94.1 FM public radio in Berkeley on the marine mucilage event or "sea snot" in Turkey on their Rude Awakening morning show. The first half of the show is about the volcanic eruptions in Iceland. I start halfway in at -30:00; and it runs about 30 minutes, Sabrina and I had a good time. <Link>
CST Biology undergraduate student Linda Mbiza (left), SoE and NOAA CCME graduate student Ariana Uwaibi, and I participated in Florida State University Schools (FSUS) STEAM night where we helped students and parents swab cell phones and cultivate bacteria on agar plates.
Images of the plates were posted on Flickr so that participants could see their actual plates and the number and diversity of colonies that grew up. In addition there were activities on learning bacterial shape and infographics on the human microbiome.
Many members of the lab pictured here spent Saturday engaged with Jr and Sr high school students as part of the FAMU STEM Day. We instructed students how to swab their cell phones and cultivate bacteria on agar plates. Each round of participants were divided into three groups, each representing a different incubation temperature; and students were asked to develop a hypothesis on the effect of temperature. Images of the plates were posted on Flickr so that participants could see their actual plates; and compare the number and diversity of colonies that grew up. We also used a dye tracer and UV light to show the students how microbes can be transmitted by direct and indirect contact.
