What is the 24hours race?

The 24-hours regatta on the IJsselmeer is held every year in the weekend of week 34 and is one of the biggest sail events in the Netherlands or even in Europe. The goal is to sail as much sea miles as possible within 24 hours. The vessel that sailed the most miles is the winner.

There are about 16 start harbors and the finish is near Medemblik. The IJsselmeer, the Markerwaard, a piece of the Wadden sea en a piece of the North Sea forms the regatta area. Among about 60 buoys,    about 100 legitimate legs are defined. A “rak” is a leg between two buoys. Each leg may be sailed only twice. The starting leg and finishing leg may be sailed only once.

Which path (sequence of legs) must be followed in order to sail the most miles, is difficult to determine. This depends on the wind angle, wind speed and characteristics of the boat. Also the position of the legs in length and according to the wind is of utmost importance

• freeware = 0 euros, limited to 8 hours regattas
