1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 d6 6.Bc4
This is the Sozin variation of the Sicilian Defence, a favourite of Bobby Fischer.
6...e6 7.0-0 Be7 8.Kh1 0-0 9.f4 a6 10.a4 Qc7 11.Ba2 Bd7 12.Be3 Nxd4 13.Bxd4 b5?!
White now sizes the initiative
14.e5! Ne8 15.Qg4
My plan was to launch a king-side attack. A tactic that hadn't occurred to me but seen by Fritz is 15.Bd5 exd5 16.Nxd5 Qd8 17.Bb6 Qb8 (17...Nc7 18.Bxc7 Qe8 19.Nxe7+ Qxe7 20.Bxd6) 18.Nxe7+ Kh8 19.a5+-
15...d5
White is threatening both exd6 and Qxg7+ but a better defence is 15...dxe5 16.fxe5
16.Rf3
Continuing my plan, the key to which is the idea of activating the bishop on a2 by offering the c2 pawn as bait. Fritz prefers 16.f5 exf5 17.Qf3 Bd8 18.Nxd5+-
16...b4 17.Ne2 Qxc2
Black takes the bait
18.Bb1! Qd1+
18...Qxe2 19.Bxh7+ etc;
Seen by Fritz but not considered by myself is 18...f5 19.Qxg7+ (19.exf6 Qd1+ 20.Bg1 Nxf6=) 19...Nxg7 20.Bxc2 when white has a slim advantage.
19.Bg1 Qxe2?
A variation I'd seen is 19...g6 when I had planned 20.Bxg6 Qxa1 21.Bxh7+ Kh8 (21...Kxh7 22.Rh3+) 22.Bd3 with mate to follow.
A line I hadn't considered was Black's only salvation, fortunately David also missed it. 19...f5 20.exf6 Nxf6 21.Bxh7+ Kh8 22.Rxd1 Nxg4 23.Bc2 which is materially even though his central pawn majority and the lack of co-ordination of white's peices gives Black a slight edge.
20.Bxh7+ Kxh7
Against 20...Kh8 I'd planned 21.Bd3 (An even better sub-variation seen by Fritz is 21.Qh3 Qxf3 22.gxf3) 21...Qxf3 22.Qxf3+-
21.Rh3+ Kg8 22.Qxe2
White now has a queen for two pieces and should win with ease.
22...g6 23.b3
White's attack is now spent so I decided to tidy up my position.
23...Ng7 24.Rc1 Rfc8 25.Rxc8+ Rxc8 26.g4
Although recommended by Fritz I rejected 26.Qxa6 as I didn't want to give black a sniff of counter-play. My move keeps his knight from the f5 & h5 squares and gives my king some breathing space against possible back rank threats.
26...d4
a rather obvious threat but Black is desperate.
27.Bxd4 Rc1+ 28.Kg2 Bc6+ 29.Kf2 a5 30.Qd2 Rb1 31.Qc2
When Black threw in the towel as he is losing more material.
